Toro Lawn Tractor won't start, engine turns

Have a Toro Lawn Tractor LX460, third season in use. Battery died 2 times while mowing. Jump started it once. Finally replaced battery, now it tries to start but doesn't. I spayed quick start in and it helps, there is gas in the fule tank and fuel lines but the gas is not kicking in. Could it be a spark plug or something with the carburator?

We have fixed the problem. There was a sensor that turns the gas off to the engine after you shut off the mower to prevent backfiring. It was replaced and now it works great! Thanks for your interest in helping!!

If the battery did die while mowing, the magneto is not generating current or, there is a faulty electrical connection from magneto or, there is a blown fuse in the magneto circuit. Could I get some additional info, please?: Why do you say the battery died while mowing? Why do you say the gas is not kicking in? What is the terminal voltage of the new battery now w/o engine running? What is battery terminal voltage with engine running? When you write that it tried to start, do you mean it cranks well but doesn't start or, that it cranks slowly? Could you describe what happens when you spray the carburetor? thanks... Charlie

SOURCE: Toro Lawn Mower Won't Start

this is a very common problem with these toro mowers. the needle valve in the bowl of the carb. is plugged up with dirt or varnish from the fuel. just under the primer bulb there is the carb bowl. it has a nut under it that holds it on remove the bowl and make sure fuel flows constantly while the bowl is off. push up on the float to stop the gas flow. this could be messy and dangerous. careful with the gas. its flammable. best solution is to remove the carb and soak it overnight in a parts cleaner like gunk. caution small parts inside. this happins every year on mine no matter what i do. seems like the orifice is so small it clogs easily. good luck

SOURCE: Toro walk behind model 20025 Gas running through the carburetor

Carb. float must be stuck open. First if you have no fuel in the tank it must all be in the crankcase.Drain the oil and refill and also check the carb as the float has to be sticking open. Hope this will help you. Donnyb60

SOURCE: starts runs min. or two then stops....

Go to toro.com then click customer care, then click manuals and parts. Type in model no. and download the owners manual. This should get you the spark and flywheel gap. Probably still something in the carb. Some orifices are very hard to find and to clean but they must be clean. Also check for dirt dopper nest in the muffler.

SOURCE: Mower will not start. Makes a loud fast clicking noise when the key is turned.

Loud ticking usually indicates near dead battery, take it out and charge it. If it still ticks you may need to replace it as they are only good for a few years.

SOURCE: Toro TimeCutter z4200 will not start

Toro Timecutter Z4200 mounts gas tank under seat and below carburetor. After first started, Z4200 will start OK again during mowing this period. But after some time passes (next mowing), gas evaporates from carburetor. Can run down battery using battery/starter getting gas backup through carburetor to start engine. This is poor Toro design, but good for service charges when replacing good components while trying to fix this problem.
Better solution is to add an outboard motor one-way squeeze bulb (approx. $15) between the fuel filter and the carburetor. Using the squeeze bulb for first start will prime the motor so that it will start without having to crank so long (which Toro says will burn up the starter). Toro saves $15/mower as well as selling new Z4200 starters.

Changed filter, oil, full of gas checked gas flow everything is good , when I start m lawn mower it runs , when I engage my pto and start mowing for about 5 minutes it just quits

if this is got the 27 hp kohler engine, I know exactly whats wrong with it , due to grass and engine oil building up in a short time under cylinder heads , it actually makes a tight ball of grass and stuff there !! this holds the engine heat and ruins the ign module that's just above it there , I put two on in one season ( tractor runs 6-10 hrs day 6 days a week ) I finally gave up I bought a Kawasaki 27 hp twin and installed it , now its run for two seasons and no problems
engaging the pto has nothing to do with it , it would cut off if you just drove it around for 15 minutes

A couple of possibilities, either the main fuse has blown, they are normally an auto motive design and located undrt the the hood of the machine, or the start solinoid has burnt out.

Does the mower die right away (cuts out) or does it sputter to a halt. Sputtering out would indicate a fuel problem. If it just cuts out when hot, then more likely an ignition problem. Your coil may need replacing. Take a close look at the coil wire (spark plug wire) and its routing. Make sure it's not touching part of the engine where it's heating up and has caused a "leak" to ground it out when it gets hot. If all is well then check your spark when the engine is hot and cuts out. Make sure you have a very good blue spark and not a weak one (check it cold first and then compare!). Again, indicating a possible ignition coil problem. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

I suspect that the alternator/generator has gone bad, preventing the battery from chargine, or generating enough voltage to keep the electric pto on your mower engaged.

I think that it is located on the engine beneath the flywheel.

I hope this helps you.
