Wash cycle starts fine and then it sounds like a rubbing sound and the cycle stalls, but the display says its still going, I think belt may be off, no oerror code ever shows up but it wont finish washing - How do I replace a belt, is there a schematic on the washing machine somewhere

There is a belt, but it never just comes off or breaks without some previous failure. The clutch design of your washer is tricky even for me to figure out what exactly needs repair. The top comes up with a putty
NEXT...
Took everything off , the motor s driving the pulley fine - on a quick wash 33 minute cycle it it completely stops at 26 minutes after cycling aff after about 60 sconds and then about 90 seconds later restarting but ultimately stopping at 26 minutes - wont unlock the top afterwards either

The top comes up with a putty knife releasing the clips on either side. Than 2 5/16" screws secure the front panel. Let me know what you find

What error codes are you getting?
I found a Service repair manual on this site search for this; FAV6800 Manual
This is my failure issue with DC/UC error codes a common problem with this model;
I just did a repair on my FAV6800AAW by lubricating the needle bearings in the clutch pulley hub, the tub displacement sensor checked OK per the service manual check. I was getting dc/uc errors in the spin cycle, washer was purchased in 7/05. I have basic mechanical skills and used a socket wrench to remove clutch pulley hub, just follow the service manual removal steps to remove clutch pulley hub. Pull the plastic cover off the clutch pulley hub and inspect the spring, clean/lube needle bearings and the clutch hub coupler that drives spinner shaft. I used WD40 I may need to re-lube down the road with a good light grease. It took a few tries for me to get the clutch pulley hub to stay on after re-install and power up, getting the clutch pulley seated properly is the trick. I did not remove the washer tub for this fix, I believe I saw a posting where someone did. I just leaned the washer back to get a better reach angle, it is a tight work area. I did not want to junk 3.5 yr old $1k machine with out trying a fix. If you want to work on this model get the service manual, I found it online and I believe you can order it in PDF format from Maytag. Good luck!
I just went thru my 10th load of a mix of light, medium and heavy loads and all work fine no unbalance errors (DC/UC). Doesn’t fix the tangle problem :) Prior to this fix I could only run the washer with no clothes in it to complete a cycle with no dc/uc error codes.
lid lock assembly look for forum response by dh1200s.
You are going to need a complete L.H. Lid lock assembly. p/n 25001048 Google for best price.
You have the issue of the Lid Locks no releasing so even after a replacemant L.H. Lid lock assembly (not cheap) you have the root cause issue to troubleshoot.
If you want to troubleshoot Google this ""Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW"" a forum where I help owners of the FAV6800A and FAV9800A machines.
It's free because my time is free. I post as dh1200s at that forum and others as well as here. FAV6800AWDIY is my second account on this forum......Good Luck

My Neptune top loading washer did the same thing.
The wash cycle starts - but never finishes. It sounds like the wash tries to start; then it pauses, and tries again, never finishing.
As a result; the wash cycle never completes itselfl leaving the top lid locked.
So a service technician needs to be called.
Washer starts, but then pauses in the middle and remains locked. No error message...just freezes at whatever number of minutes are left. Will unlock if you push the off button and let it sit. Tub still has water in it when opened. Seems like it just freezes in the middle of the cycle. I called a technician out.
I have started the washer on the 'QUICK WASH cycle which is a 35 min. cycle the washer pauses at 29 mins starts running water, pauses, starts running water, pauses and won't count down past the 29 min.mark. It's not spinning water out leaving the lid in lock position even when the machine is unplugged.
