Slow water leak past flapper seal.

The flapper doesn't seal enough to prevent water seepage that causes the flush to cycle every half hour. This is an Eljer 1.6 gal one-piece toilet

Yes, but it did not help. Is there a weighted flapper that would hold down tighter?

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2009

I found the fix. Remove the entire fill assembly and replace it. But it's not easy; the bottom part must be reverse unscrewed (rotated ccw)from the top part and you need to make a tool out of a piece of PCV pipe to do it. MIne was wedged in so tight that I had to hacksaw it out.

Replace flapper, it is worn out.Turn off water valve. Flush toilet, remove flapper. Then replace flapper, adjust chain to same size as old one, then turn water back on.

No, your fill tube where the flapper sits is probably worn, they sell a kit to fix this or just replace the fill tube completely. Requirers removing tank. I would try kit to fix where flapper sits, it is an epoxy ring that seats itself over exsisting area.

As most city water suppies high mineral and calcium concentration, often using an SOS or Brillow pad to clean mineral deposits from the 'neck' that the flapper seats on to. This improve contact having a clean mating surface. Doing this along with a new flapper should do the trick. I also would coat both surfaces with Magic Lube (Gasket Lube) found at pool supply stores to further seal the 2 surfaces and prevent further mineral build-up. This shoud do the trick 99% of the time.

Hello, W/D here.

Shut off the water to the tank and flush it. Replace the flapper. That's the only repair available for them. Any hardware store can supply the part.

Best regards,

--W/D--

I had an issue today where the flapper still wasn't sealing. I found the gasket at the low edge of the flapper seat was rippled, probably from a heavy dose of bleach, and the rippled gasket was keeping the flapper from making a good seal on the flapper seat. I trimmed the gasket with a razor knife, and this remedied the problem. --W/D--

Relace flush valve seal

The American Standard Cadet 3 flowise one piece toilet uses a flapper valve with a soft nylon washer to seal against the water outlet.
Over time this nylon washer develops 'puckers' causing water to seep between the nylon washer and the seat of the flapper. This seepage causes the water level in the tank to drop to a point where the water inlet valve opens to replace the lost water in the tank.
There are two ways to correct this problem:
1. Replace the soft nylon washer on the flapper, or
2. Replace the entire flapper valve.
Hope this solution helps.

I purchased a Fresca FTL2336 Apus One-Piece toilet and installed it. I can hear a constant drip of water escaping from the tank causing the toilet to refill every few hours. I have lifted the flapper,...

Fresca uses a silicone material on their flapper that will distort after a while. There are also ridges on the underside of the plastic surface of the flapper that seals the tank which allows water to seep past. To this point, I have not been able to find any material that would work as a replacement. To add to that, Fresca does not sell the flapper individually, leaving you to buy the entire flush assembly as a 'purchased' fix. Not a good solution, since it will only start to leak again.

I am still searching for a solution to cure the problem once and for all. It's a great looking toilet but I prefer not to waste innumerable gallons because of poor design / materials.

My toilet keeps leaking water and then fill ups on its own. Where could the leak be how do I fix it? Also I have to hold down the flush lever awhile for the toilet to completely flush. Can this be fixed ?...

If you are not getting puddles on the floor then it is probably the 'FLAP" that holds the water in the tank. It is the rubber part that is connected to your handle. Any hardware store will carry that part since it is an item that will fail, especially in hard water. It is probably the cause of both problems.

I have a new American Standard Cadet 3 that was just installed. After flushing, the water fills into the bowl. However, after several minutes, the water in the bowl slowly drains away and is nearly gone....

Sorry for problem with new toilet.
You say water is leaking out of the bowl?

Toilets have 2 parts:
1) Tank: where water is stored for the flush and is sealed with a flapper.
2) Bowl: where water flushes down.

a) If tank is leaking water, then flapper is suspect. Replace flapper and see if that works.
Lift up flapper and run finger around rim to see if there is a rough spot that would indicate flush valve is defective, and needs replacement.
See typical flush valve

b) If bowl is leaking, that is very unusual and would indicate a crack in the porcelain.

If installer sold you the toilet, it is his responsibility to make good on product.

Did you replace the flush valve or the flapper?

There must either be a problem with the seal between the two surfaces of the flapper and flush valve or the flapper is being prevented by the flush system to returning to make a seal against the flush valve after the water completes draining during the flush cycle or more likely water is draining through the overflow tube.

Make sure the sealing surfaces are clean and not damaged.

Make sure the flapper is not being interfered with and is able to return to the closed position to make a complete seal against the flush valve.

Check adjustment of the water fill level to make sure the water is not filling above the water overflow. If the inlet valve does not shut-off when the level is adjusted to the proper level the water inlet valve may need replacing.

I cannots top leaking. The toilet is full with water but from time to time it opens the walve to get more water in.

When a fill valve opens up from time to time to let more water in it is because the rubber flapper is not sealing properly and is allowing water to slowly seep out.
Toto Caryles have a 5 year parts warranty so keep this in mind if ti applies. If replacing the flapper doesn't solve the seepage problem then the flush valve (the white assembly the flapper connects to) may have to be replaced.
Be sure to install the new flapper at the exact chain length as the one you removed.

My water tank leaking how can i fix the problem look like from inside the tank don,t know how to loose the flush valve please help me

Try an epoxy putty on the inside of the tank. If it is a slow leak then this will be fine. If yu have a large crack then you need to replace the toilet as it is nolonger in safe working condition and you would not want to have it break when you are away from home.

Get an epoxy putty that can dry while still wet and roughen up the inside surface of the tank with a bit of sandpaper or steel wool before to give the epoxy a good surface to adhear to.

Hope this helps.

American standard cadet 3 leaking around seal

get a new filler assembly. the water in the tank is heavy enough to close the seal completely. or the rubber seal is not making contact. thats' why the leak.
change the whole assemble ususally correct the problem.
adjuste the flow to about 1/4 to 1/3 under the over flow. if that still don't give you the pressure. you ca adjust the flow tube to 1/5 under the cover. that is the max.
