SOURCE: what is the LOG function on the HP 10bII

The 10bII does not have a key for the common logarithm function. You can use the natural logarithm function (LN, the shifted function of the 2 key) to compute the common logarithm of a number using the relationship
log(x) = ln(x)/ln(10)

In words, calculate the natural log of the value and divide it by the natural log of ten.

Determinants of matrix

First of all, the HP 10bII is a financial calculator and does not handle matrices. For all other calculators, you must first create a square matrix, using the Matrix editor. Then you look for the command that calculates the determinant. The syntax will look something like this
det (Mat A) (Enter/=/EXE)

HP10BII+ CALCULATING THE GEOMETRIC MEAN, WHEN I HIT yX it says pend and won't calculate?

When an HP calculator displays pend(ing) it is waiting for the user to complete the command. From what I understand you are raising some number to a power. You enter the number (base) you press a shift key of some sort then the [Y^x] and the calculator displays pend. It is waiting for you to enter the exponent.

How do you find out how long it would take to triple an amount at 6% interest, compounded continuously?

Solve the formula e^(rt) = 3 , where r=0.06 per time period

(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compound_interest#Continuous_compounding for details)

Taking the logarithm of both sides and rearranging gives: t = ln(3)/0.06 = 18.31 time periods. The logarithm function is a shifted function on the 2 button on the 10bii calculator.

Hi: I bought a HP 10bii Financial Calculator. I find it difficult to get a correct answer... For an easy example, I try to find the future value of $100 today after 3 years with an annual interest rate...

What you've done is calculate the future value after 3 months, not 3 years.

Press 1 SHIFT [P/YR] to set the payments per year to one. Now the FV key should give you 115.76
