I have a steam iron model D340. It is about a 2 years old but the finish came off the tip of the iron so I can no longer use it because it snags the fabric.

This iron does not get heavy use - we are retired and only iron sheets, blouses and shirts. Unfortunately I discovered this when ironing an expensive shirt and it snagged a couple of threads. Can this be repaired?

Get some very fine wet and dry sandpaper (1200 grit) and carefully smooth the surface.

SOURCE: Water drips out of steam holes

I suspect that by placing it on its heel rest the water from the tank is not allowed to enter into the steam chamber and when you go into ironing mode there is a rush of water that is cooling down the sole plate to below steaming temperature. Try keeping it in the horizontal position on a heat proof pad and press the steam button just before going into ironing mode.

SOURCE: irons will not heat properly

This may sound weird, but try them at someone else's house, it could be possible that your wiring is not allowing them the amperage they need to heat properly.

SOURCE: No steam

It appears that your rocker switch is broken, I am attempting to find a source for the switch and the screw driver that removes the screws holding the unit together

SOURCE: Cleaning Ironing Steam Press

Most heating plates on steam presses are teflon coated. I have used 409 to rub rust and other stains off the telfon coated heating plates before. Try that.
Also WD-40 works well with other stains. Don't ask me why, but WD-40 cleans some stuff really well.

There is a product called goo-be-gone available at any hardware store in a small bottle which will remove the adhesive easily.

When I have finished ironing am I supposed to empty the residue water out of the water tank

You may if you wish.
If you do not, and you have no need to use the iron for a long time, the water can evaporate while it is sitting still, and leave a residue of minerals inside the iron, which will, over time, plug up the iron so the steam does no longer work.
That can take many months or a few years.
Using the iron regularly will negate the need to empty it.
God bless your efforts.

The iron has been all descaled, however we cannot get any steam when pressing the button. It is a Tefal express generator model 3 years old.

Once you have descaled the boiler and refilled your frontpiece of the iron itself (hopefully with distilled water - any supermarket) you press the "reset"/ "restart" button on the back end of the steam generating unit. When the water is hot enough press steam button & turbo button a few times - WARNING: make sure iron is facing downwards and cover ironing board with old rag because initially brown steam splatter will come out on first few steam releases.

Sunbeam steam iron model #GCSBRS-1 does not give steam. 11/2yr old

I have had the same issue with both of these irons. I bought them both thinking they would be a "better" iron with more steam and have not been happy within the first year of owning them. Thanks for the tips.

Euro-pro EP1005 iron--iron heats -blower works-but no steam

You may not need a new iron, my wife's iron is doing the same thing. take the top of the ironing board off (you will need a torx t-20 security bit driver), under the tank is a connection that may have rusted out re-connet it and turn the iron on. Once it heats up, check the tank for leaks. The tank may need to be replace as well or try a 5-minute epoxy type glue on the leaks once it has cooled. If the tank leaks you will get not get enlugh pressure building up to get the steam.

Steam doesnt work

A mineral buildup from your water may be blocking the holes in the soleplate of your iron. Before you do anything, read the instruction booklet for your appliance or call the manufacturer. The old remedy of using vinegar to unclog an iron is no longer recommended for many models. Some manufacturers suggest alternating tap and distilled water in the steam compartment to avoid a mineral buildup; others recommend using a specialized cleaning product (available at fabric and grocery stores) to clean the soleplate.
