The noise is coming from the compressor and is a result of a broken support spring inside the compressor. When the unit shuts down, the inner casing rattles against the outer casing because the spring is not there to keep them apart. The only fix is to replace the compressor but otherwise it is just bothersome.

If I remember right, there is a long pipe that attaches to the transaxle shifter, and goes up to underneath the stick.
There is a nylon bushing that holds it in place on the stick end. It wears thin and falls out, allowing this long pipe to bang around.
Mark the edge of the shifter plate first, then unbolt the 2 13mm bolts, to remove the shifter and the lock out plate underneath it.
Remember the orientation of the lockout plate, or keep it with the shift plate, so that you don't try to reinstall it upside down later.
Then pull out the stick.
Notice the prong and how it fits into the groove of the cup on the end of the long pipe, for reinstallation.
Then grab the long pipe and move it around.
See how it hits the edge of a hole in a metal support, instead of being held tightly by a plastic bushing.
If I remember right, the new bushing has a split on one side so that you can open it and put it around the pipe, and then you slide it back until it snaps into the hole.
Grease it well.
Put the shift plate back where is was, or else you might have trouble shifting into all the gears.
