I believe this unit has the Hydro Gear K46 transaxle (transmission). Be sure the belt as not slipped out of place from the transaxle (transmission) drive pulley,

If belt is OK, then, possibly the transaxle is low on fluid. Unfortunately the K46btransaxle is a sealed unit. Fluid can be added, but it involves lowering the transaxle. If it is low on fluid then it obviously has leaked out some where, likely a shaft seal. If fluid has leaked from a shaft seal, the seal will need replaced. Or it could just be transaxle is kaput.

See Hydro Gear link for more information. https://www.tufftorqservices.com/instance1EnvEEdefault/FlatHTML/TechInfo/docs/repair/K46_T40_TLT200Axle_Seal_REPLACEMENT.pdf

It sounds like the brake plate is sticking on the transaxle,if you look on the right side of the transaxle a rod and spring run back from the front to a plate, under this plate are two 1/4 pins that actuate the brake pads on the disc, lubricate these pins with wd-40 and move the plate back and forth to see i this frees the problem up.

SOURCE: Loss on drive on Poulan Lawn Tractor

Check to make sure the belt is not broken or did not come off the transaxle pulley, you can check by removing battery from under seat and pulling battery box out to examine top of transaxle,Pay close attention to the wire belt guide on the rh side of the transaxle pulley it should be close to the backside of the belt after it is reinstalled. If you recently may have removed the rear tire make sure the square key on the axle didn't drop out.Is the tractor a hydrostat drive? If so make sure brake is not stuck on,if it was it would make a grinding noise.

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

Blade engagement lever won't disengage

If this is a manual engagment system all the lever does is to pull a jockey wheel into the back of the belt to tention it thus starting the blades to turn, so either the cable is jammed that pulls the jockey wheel in, or the jockey wheel arm is seized and needs freeing off to allow the jockey to to move to the relaxed position.

Craftsman model 917.271814 will not go forward or reverse. Heard a "click" and mower stopped moving; engine and blade still running.

Check the drive belt that runs back to the transaxle,it sounds like it broke. If the belt is in the pulley check to see if the transaxle pulley is turning when the clutch is out. Also make sure both wheel axle keys are in the rear wheels. If all this checks out the transaxle may have broke, look underneath to see if it is broken there.

Lawnmower will not move in gear with motor running

Hi
Check to see if any oil leaks between rear wheels where the tractor was parked. Also make sure hydrostatic disengage lever, at rear of tractor by hitch, has to be pushed in.
