Press menu then start mono (b/w) then 4x arrow-up-button. Machine will be in maintenance-mode: What error code does the display show off?
SOURCE: error 46 in brother mfc-440cn
Machine Error 46 ("Unable to Clean") indicates that the wasteink is full. Basicly it gives you two options - have it replaced (a semi-complicated performance which requires buying a spare part and change it yourself) or have it sent to service. If you do not have any warranty on the machine, the more suitable would probably be to just replace the machine instead, since it's relatively cheap compared to both service costs and having the wasteink replaced, but you instead get a full new warranty on your new machine.
Unfortunately, there's nothing you yourself can do to remove this error, without actually changing an item inside the machine.

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC3420C after replacing the print head with a new one the same error 41 occured 4 weeks later.
I finally fixed the problem (see photo's) and sent the parts back to Brother :-)
Don't buy Brother Inkjet technology its all ****!.
Their laser technology seems to be much more robust and reliable, have had a Brother HL-1440 since 2004 and its still running well.

Error code 36 is generally because of a paper jam that was not cleared. Remove the rear jam cover (the plastic cover in the back center of the machine)and the paper tray and check for any pieces of paper. Sometimes just a scrap will remain, but it's enough to cause the machine to not work.
Once you've replaced the covers, if the jam code does not reset, turn the machine off and then back on.

This is the Brother definition of error code 4F:
"The head drive voltage has dropped from the high to low level in an abnormally short period." or "The head drive voltage has not risen to the specified level within the specified period in the self-diagnosis"
Causes:
"Piezoelectric ceramic actuator defective (Cracks or rare short)"
or
"Main PCB defective"
No simple fix I'm afraid. You could contact a Brother repair agent but I expect they will want to charge you more than a new machine.
Getting hold of parts for a Brother machine as a private individual (i.e. you're not a trade professional) is almost impossible, and even if you can, parts are ridiculously expensive - again, 9 times out of 10 it costs more to repair than buy a new printer. I imagine this is to preserve Brother's service agents' business, and Brother's new machine sales. Sorry.
