Maybe a defrost problem. Evaporator coils frozen up.

Turned out main board was not cutting the freezer blower on (the blower cools refrigerator - freezes ice in ice maker).

SOURCE: Ice maker freezing up

If it is only the fill tube that is freezing up, or getting full of ice, than your water valve is leaking (letting drops of water thru to your ice maker and filling the icemaker fill tube up and freezing). If this is the case, replace the dual water valve (part # 1071263) located in the back of the refrigerator, just follow the water line from your wall into the refrigerator. Make sure you turn off the water to the refrigerator and also unplug it. The dual water valve is the one that has two water lines, one going to the icemaker and one going to the water dispenser. On this model, I think you only have one water valve. On some you have two, the primary water valve and a secondary water valve (the dual valve). If this is your case, I would highly recommend you replace both. As far as the Refrigerator side freezing things up, I think that is a whole different issue. Please post back.

SOURCE: slow water flow

dadcanfix. There are two possibilities here. One could be the water valve itself, clogged or not seating or opening properly. The second would be the water tank on the refrigerator side, partially frozen. I believe they have a kit now with coiled tubing that replaces that tank because of the trouble they had with it. Remove the refer drawers and take a hair dryer and go over the tank lightly. See if that improves the water flow. Catriver..post back.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid ice maker

Is it sticking all the way up in off position? If so there is a redesigned arm to stop this problem. Instead of just a wire arm, it has a plastic flap on the bottom that hinges. This keeps the arm from jumping into the off position when it cycles. Any whirlpool/kitchenaid servicer should have one and show you how to replace it. Takes just a few seconds. If it is sticking half way down or lower, then it is binding up somewhere. You should be able to raise it about 2" and it fall freely back into place. Post back if this is what is happening.

My ice maker doesn't make enough ice cubes

Is the ice maker itself filling normally, meaning where the cubes are made gets enough water to cover the complete area or just a few slots? If not then check the fill tube where the water comes into the ice maker to make sure no ice has formed blocking the water from coming in.
Now if ice production in general has slowed, going from every 45 minutes or so to like every 6 hours, then your machine more than likely isn't getting cold enough. The ice maker requires the temperature be at least 10 degrees F or below for it to function properly.

Hoshisaki makes ice to slow

not sure what "too slow" is to you. Hoshi machines are designed to make more ice per batch but less batches per day. It is not unusual for a batch to take 25-35 minutes for one batch. The 1600 makes a lot of ice per batch. Look for some obvious things. If air cooled condenser, be sure it is clean. Make sure the water to the machine is not Hot water. It is not unusual to get Hot water feedback in a restaurant environment. Check for a leaking water valve. A sticking float can also cause long freeze cycles. Start with that and let me know if I can be of any further help,.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Often ice maker issues are a symptom of an automatic defrosting problem OR a leaking (dripping / bypassing) ice maker water valve.

First off you should try and prove that there are no un-necessary water leakages by doing the following:

1. Turn the icemaker OFF
2. Remove the plastic line where it connects to the thru the cabinet water tube by pinching the clamp and pulling down on the plastic tube.
3. Place end of the plastic tube into a bucket for about 12 hours. At the end of 12 hours check the bucket for ANY water. If there is a noticable amount of water (more than 1 oz) the water valve is leaking water by the valve diaphram seat. The only remedy for this is to change the units water valve assy.

As far as a possible automatic defrosting problem..... soft ice cream is a symptom along with that of low ice production.

The evaporator coils get a substantial amount of ice build up on them and then the airflow in the freezer compartment is restricted resulting in a change in the freezer comprtment temp. If you do have an automatic defrosting problem you will soon notice noise from the evaporator fan as the ice build up encroaches into the fan blade path. Additionally the fresh food compartment will warm up.

The ice maker will not cycle until it reaches 16 to 15 deg F. The ice maker harvest cycle is started when the ice maker thermostat closes and advances the ice maker module.

Do the water in the bucket test and then look for signs of ice build up on the evaporator coils.

If neither of the above manifest / present then download this manual and follow the troubleshooting procedures:

Ice maker

If there is not other problem it will start to work after there is water in the ice mold and it freezes. It will then dump and refill with water.
You can Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

Found in the FAQ section on Samsung.com:
Samsung refrigerator freezers produce about 120 cubes per day, which is in line with most manufacturer specifications.
Empty the ice tray and let the unit run for 24 hours.
If fewer than 50 cubes are produced during the 24-hour test, then your refrigerator requires service. Please contact Samsung Service at 1-800-SAMSUNG to schedule a service appointment.
If your freezer is producing 50 to 90 cubes per day, try the following:
  • Set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting. Freezer temperature must be 5 degrees Fahrenheit or less for the ice maker to work properly.
  • Make sure that the water valve on the refrigerator water supply line is completely open. You can find the water valve where the refrigerator water supply line taps into your house water line.
  • If you have a water filter in your refrigerator, change the filter cartridge. For instructions, see your Users Manual.
If you want your freezer to produce more than 120 ice cubes in a day, try the following:
  • An ice maker typically makes 1 tray of ice every 90 minutes. To shorten the amount of time the freezer takes to produce a tray of ice, set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting.
  • If your refrigerator has a Power Freeze function, press the Power Freeze button to speed up the ice making process. In the Power Freeze mode, both the compressor and the freezer fan run for 10 hours continuously. The ice making interval is reduced from 90 minutes to 55 minutes. If the ice bucket fills in less than 10 hours, Power Freeze stops automatically.
NOTE: If you have just installed your refrigerator, it will take 6 to 12 hours for the refrigerator to produce ice.
You should throw away the first three batches of ice cubes that the ice maker produces (approximately 30 cubes) to ensure the ice maker is making ice from clean water.
