I would put the drill in reverse and hold the "chuck" and very slowly and carefully press the trigger lightly. This should bring the clamping device back where you can see it.
Thanks I have tried that but the clamping device is staying resolutely hidden. Do you have any other suggestions?
Sorry, I wish I could be there to see it firsthand! Even a picture of it might not be enough! How about a handy person who could assess it "no charge".
Thank you all for your help. My son fixed it for me by unplugging the drill, moving the steadying handle on to the chuck head to provide extra leverage. He then moved the mode to screw and then holding down the spindle lock button, manually moved the head until it released. One happy mother!
Thank you for the feedback.

SOURCE: locked drill chuck
i have the same tool and have had the same problem
i use 2 large prs of channel locks(water pump pliers) to break the bond
SOURCE: Black and Decker corded drill won't tighten around a bit.
the chuck sounds like it is bad or maybe stuck from rust, what you can try and do is spray some WD-40 on the jaws and then try and holding the collar with a glove and run the drill SLOWLY in forward/reverse and see if it loosens up if not you will need a new one.

Try to keep your drill straight and try a bit harder - looks like you were drilling something very heavy.
SOURCE: keyless drill has locked in a closed position with the drill bit
I just put mine in reverse and grasp the chuck with a pair of channel locks. Pull the trigger and hold the channel locks tightly. The chuck will release the bit.

Hello. Wrap a towel around the chuck and use a pipe wrench or a pair of channel locks to put a little force on the chuck. J.
