Question about Water Filters & Coolers

1 Answer

I bought a stand up hot and cold water dispenser and there is a bare short wire coming out beside the plug. Is that the ground, and if so, where do I attach it?

SOURCE: My hot water heater has a red and a black wire, but

Your 220v hot water heater does not need the neutral(white) wire coming in. Bare wire goes to ground -green headed screw. Black goes to black, Red goes to red. White gets teminated with a wirenut or some electrical tape.

SOURCE: amtrol water heater WH-7P gets barely warm water

I had the same problem. I had a steam boiler and the water level in the glass gauge was below the top of the coil of the tank. remember water finds its own level, so it settled at the glass gauge level, therefore air got in coil.

to resolve problem : turned on manual water feed to boiler to raise water level. as water level got higher, let out water in hosecock between boiler and amtrol. amtrol noticed hot water reduction, circulator clicked on, boiler kicked on, turned off hosecock, turned off manual feed. I effectively bleed water out of line by running water out of amtrol as water feed in boiler increased water level above coil.

took a while to figure this out, so if this is the problem, dont feel to bad. keep water level of steam boiler high.

YOU CAN BE KILLED IF YOU DON'T UNPLUG THE REFRIGERATOR!!!! EVEN AFTER UNPLUGGING IT, BE PRUDENT TO NOT TOUCH BARE WIRES OR TERMINALS.

If it is like my Kenmore, there are two solenoids at the back bottom right (facing the back) of refrigerator where the water supply connects to the refrigerator, and it sounds as if both solenoids (one for water dispenser and the other for ice maker) are energized at the same time as though the hot wires to the solenoids are shorted together. Possibly, if the replacement icemaker is not an exact replacement, a wiring difference might cause this short. ONLY IF YOU ARE QUALIFIED TO DO ELECTRICAL WORK will I suggest the following. YOU CAN BE KILLED IF YOU DON'T
UNPLUG THE REFRIGERATOR!!!! Disconnect one wire at a time by pulling and wiggling from side to side if the connectors are fastons , and with an ohm meter check for a short between the two hot wires of the solenoids. Remember where each wire goes. To determine which are the hot wires first measure each wire to a bare metal place on the refrigerator. Continuity between the wires (2) to the bare metal indicates ground. The remaining 2 wires are the hot wires. Continuity between these wires indicates they are shorted together, which is the cause of your problem. Seek out the short. Since I am not an expert myself, the preceding suggestion may not work if the short only occurs at the time that the icemaker calls for water.

I have been told that during a new installation you must install a ground wire from the hot water line to the cold water line??

The #6 bare copper jumper wire or ground wire between hot and cold pipes is to prevent stray household current from degrading metal parts of water heater and causing early failure of tank.
It's for your benefit and doesn't cost much, and may in fact be unnecessary .... except in cases where it is necessary which you wouldn't know until tank rusts out prematurely.
