Need more information - make / model
It sounds like you probably need a service kit - the orings are worn and it has lost compression. If you provide the make / model I may be able to direct you a little better.
Go to the Dewalt service website at http://servicenet.dewalt.com, put the model number in the parts search box and you'll be able to view or download the parts breakdown and owner's manual. By the manual that model does have three modes; a hammer only, drill only and hammer/drill.

if it does'nt have a keye'd chuck, it may have arubber collar,spary some lube down into chuck and firmly push down,w handle agains't ground or other firm surface

It could be a dirty switch connection in the trigger assembly , it happens to me on my electric sanders all the time , just open it up and try blowing it out with an air compressor
