Yes, though it's a bit complicated. It's explained in detail here: http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/1500/1500_firmware.htm In a nutshell, on most models you can change the bios with a CD that you can burn. This includes adding your own background image. I'd say, even if your model number shows one you can't upgrade, try it anyway. It's likely the previous owner upgraded to a CD flashable bios.

My daughters had the same problem, try replacing C411 (I think that was the number on the board), its a 10V 1000uf capacitor in what appears to be the 5V power supply section toward the right rear of the main board, that fixed it. On hers the capacitor was swelled up on the end. I checked it out of the circuit and the DVM I used only indicated it had about 500uf capacity.

I openned mine up and found that the lens carrige was not in the fully retracted position. I pushed it all the way back to the back of the slide. Then I removed the two screws on either side of the spindle support so I could get to the lens. I hit the lens with some compressed air, plugged it in and loaded a disk and it worked like a champ. Listening to some Stevie Ray Vaughn right now!!! And going to watch some movies later. ;)
Good luck, I hope this helps someone.
