Be warned, this is a low level format tool from them. What ever is on your flash drive will be erased.
I went exploring on these drives and found that when they start acting like they are write protected, it means that the drive corrupted. The low level format tool, will completely reformat that drive, and hopefully correct the problem.
They say it happens (usually) if you removed the drive from a computer, without using the safe eject USB function.
If this is a new flash drive, take it back to where you got it, and ask for a replacement.
SOURCE: Deleted files from my PNY 4GB flash drive are still taking up space.
Most flash drive comes with its on date support files on it. If those had not been removed then, yes it will show some space used.

SOURCE: Samsung LA40C530 LCD USB limit
I have tested the LA40C530 Samsung with a 300GB external hard disk and it works well without any issue. My guess is that it should support 500GB as well. I have played video/music/pictures on my WD 300GB HDD.

Do you have a legit copy of windows, sometimes if the copy is (Backup) then Windows will purposely disable drivers.
If, its a genuine version, first try plugging your usb device into another usb port somewhere. Try powering down your PC and powering it back on. If these steps do not work, go to Start>Contro>Driver/Devices and look if there is any Yellow caution signs with the device plugged in. If so, click on it and follow the steps prompted to find the appropriate driver for your USB device. It will do a search by itself.
Hope this helps-
