That would be a half round woodruf key. If the piece that fell out is long and rectangular in shape, this is the piece that has broken off from it. You'll have to drive the remaining piece out of the shaft key way, take it to a repair shop and buy a new one that is exactly the same size. If it is too big, it won't fit. If it is too small, it will slop around and break again. If it is stuck, take a pointed punch and hammer and drive one end or the other DOWN, NOT THE MIDDLE, and it should slide out like a chair rocker. When you go to install the new one, you have to put the round end into the key way, align the grove in the wheel hub with the key and CAREFULLY slide it on. If you bump the key and dislodge it, the wheel won't go on. Just pull it back off and relocate the key in it's groove. Good luck.

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60

Two things you can do. First if you look close you may see a spot where you can adjust the chain tension. Nest your chain should have what is called master link. Look close and you will see a clip that undoes the link. Pull the link out and the chain will come apart. If you are not mechanically inclined take it to any small engine shop and they will take a link out for you and then you will be home free.Hope this helps. donnyb60

SOURCE: Four wheel drive wont engage. Tranfer case is
Sounds like you either have a vaccum leak or your 4 wheel drive actuator is not working to engage the front differential. On my 98 ram there is a black and red plastic lines that are used for the vaccum lines. They are underneath and go from the transfer case to the front axle, check to see if one or both might be cracked or broke completely. If the lines are good then it could be your actuator on the front axle. A new one is about $93 at advance auto parts and not very hard to replace
