You almost have it correct. There is one more patch you must install before SP32646.
Read about kb888111.exe file from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111/en-us
But kb888111.exe is not available at that link. It is here:
http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/11/81540.aspx
Then re-install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (SP32646), and finally install the Conexant High Definition Audio Driver

SOURCE: 98 Chevy pickup brake lights just stopped working
have you tried to find the brake pedal switch? follow the brake pedal under the dash and there should be a switch that the brake pedal presses to activate the lights when you push it in . if everything else has been checked then I suspect that the switch has moved enough to not work or it may be just bad. let me know if this was it.... hope this works

Most active pickups contain a protective diode which will take the heat (so to speak) should something happen like you describe. Once this occurs, the diode usually needs to be replaced. Depending upon which one you have will determine whether or not this can be done. Some require complete replacement. I'm a bit curious how this happened because most battery compartments will not allow the battery to be inserted incorrectly. Regardless of the cause, the pickup will require a bit of repair work. If there is access to the electronics portion, the repair is relatively simple.
This is not typically a DIY repair though.

Most of the time the problem is the small motor that moves the door.
