Hey Ken, Neil here from Dark Side Reelz. it boils down to over oiled bearings, or bearings that require cleaning, your spool shaft only rides on 2 or max of 3 points, (depending on reel make) each of those points contains a bearing the spool shaft seats in those bearings any build up will greatly reduce casting distance. I specialize in reel cleanings, rebuilds and restorations as well as custom work like upgrades and super tuning. Drag factory installed for left-hand wind. To change your real to right-hand wind, remove spool, pull the keyed bush and clicker plate assembly off the spindle. Flip the clutch bearing (silver) and reassemble.

With the new line threaded through all of the fishing rod's eyelets, open the bail. You open the bail by pulling it over across the spool, until it locks in an open position. Tie the line in a knot around the reel's spool, and loosely wrap the line around the spool at least 7 to 8 times, then pull slowly on the line, to tighten the line that is wrapped around the spool.
Holding the box or spool of fishing line between your feet, so that it will remain close to you, start reeling in your casting rod. When you start reeling it in, the bail automatically closes, and makes the line wrap onto the spool properly. Reel the new line in until the spool is about 75% full, or to the lines marked inside the reel's spool. Cut the new line about 8 feet from the outer-most eyelet of your fishing rod.

feed the line down through the eyelets on your pole ,now open the bail on your reel tie the line on the spool,and start reeling(keep tension on the line,prevents line from tangling) when i resting mine I only go about two thirds on my spool.

According to the intructions and I quote "Take off the cowling that covers the spool, twist off the pick up mechanism clockwise and a half turn anti clockwise will remove the spool"
