You need to richen the mixture up, they always sell them running to lean to pass regulations, the screw nearest the engine undo 1/4 turn & try again.

Testimonial: "hi, when you say undo, do you mean turn lefty loosey (cc)?"

  • Danny Kimble Nov 08, 2018

Yes I mean left, if you undo it it will richen the mixture, the screw nearest the engine is slow speed the other one is high speed, you may have to cut a slot in them so can use a flat blade screwdriver.

My String Trimmer Starts, But Won't Stay Running Troubleshooting Problems with Starting Weed Eaters

  • 2My Stihl Weed Trimmer Is Dying at Full Throttle
  • 3Know When You Have the Wrong Weed Eater Fuel Mixture?
  • 4My Ryobi CS26 Won't Start

  • The two-cycle engine that runs your string trimmer needs three things to operate smoothly: clean fuel, air circulation and a spark. The engine won't start if any of these elements are missing, but it may run for a short time if only the air or fuel flow is restricted. It isn't difficult to restore air circulation, but if the fuel flow is restricted, you may need to disassemble the carburetor and clean it.
Air Circulation The engine draws air into the combustion chamber through the intake port, and if the air filter is dirty, combustion is partial and the trimmer will sputter and die. The air filter is readily removable, and replacements are inexpensive. Similarly, air must exit through the exhaust port, and that is covered by a spark arrestor to prevent fires. When the spark arrestor is clogged, the engine can't get rid of its exhaust gases, and it won't keep running. The spark arrestor is a screen located just behind the muffler. Pull it out and clean or replace it.
Fuel Circulation -- Quick Fixes The gas cap on most trimmer has a small air inlet hole that allows air to enter the fuel tank, preventing a vacuum from forming as fuel sprays into the carburetor. It's easy to check whether or not this hole is blocked -- just loosen the cap and see if the trimmer operation improves. If it does, it's time to replace the gas cap. The fuel system also includes a filter that can clog. It's difficult to determine visually whether or not it's blocked, but it's easy and inexpensive to replace. You should do this as part of regular maintenance.
Old Fuel If you leave the trimmer full of gas when you store it for the winter, the fuel partially evaporates, leaving behind a sludge that resembles varnish. This sludge can partially block the inlet ports for the carburetor. Consequently, there may be enough fuel in the carburetor to start the engine, but there may not be enough to keep it running. You can prevent this from happening by adding fuel stabilizer to the gas tank before you store the trimmer, but once the carburetor is blocked, there's no alternative to cleaning or replacing it.
Servicing the Carburetor While it can be a delicate task to disassemble a carburetor for a complete cleaning, you usually don't have to do that to remove deposits from old fuel. The first step, after you've located the carburetor, is to drain the float bowl. After unscrewing and removing it from the trimmer, spray it generously with carburetor cleaner, being sure to direct the cleaner through all the port orifices. If the trimmer doesn't run smoothly after doing this, disassemble for a more thorough cleaning. It's probably best to take the carburetor to a service professional for this.

SOURCE: Gas Trimmer will not stay started

Many times with a gas mix, after sitting for a while, the mix separates and gums up the carb. Taking the carb off and soaking it overnight in a parts or carb cleaner and running carb cleaner through the tank and gas lines will cure this.

SOURCE: I have a Ryobi trimmer and when I start it will not stay on

    Here was my solution:
I was having problems with my ryobi cs30 weedeater also. It would start up fine on full choke, but i could not give it more than half throttle or ever take the choke off or it would stall out. I replaced fuel mixture, spark plug, spark arrestor/exhaust, fuel lines, cleaned carb, and still nothing! I was considering getting a better machine. Then i decided to play with the carb adjustments.(on my cs-30, they are two screws on the carb that have a "L" and "H" next to them) I dont think you can get the specialty tool for adjusting the carb unless you are a repair tech, so i just took a Dremmel tool with the circular cut-off wheel to the head of the specialty screws and made them into "flat-head" screws so i could adjust them with a regular screwdriver (if you dont have a dremmel too, get one!) (As i was cutting into the head of the screws, i also cut into the casing protecting the head of the screws that was in the way, this does not cause any damage to the unit, that casing is only there to keep "un-certified" people from adjusting it for themselves.)
Now to the easy part: The "L" screw adjusts the idle fuel mixture and the "H" screw adjusts the full throttle fuel mixture. turning the screws clockwise make the machine run leaner (less fuel) and counter clockwise makes it run richer (more fuel).
-I started out by turning each screw 1/2 turn counter clockwise and started it up, then as it was idling, i started adjusting the "L" screw as i was moving the choke position to run, after a few full turns counter clockwise of the "L" screw, it was idling perfectly in the run position, then i did the same thing the the "H" screw while holding down the throttle and i got it to run perfectly in the run position. Now it is running way better than it ever has. I hope this helps everyone.
    Good Luck!

SOURCE: The weedwacker dies when I squeeze the throttle trigger

You need to clean the carburetor. Remove and disassemble carb. Use a den Tek Brush, (used to clean between teeth), to clean the small portals in carb. Use a carb. cleaner while cleaning. Make sure the small screen in carb. is free of debris. The smallest of paticles can cause the carb. not to run right. Reassemble the carb. and try starting. If there is no change, then you will need to buy a carb. kit for your trimmer. Replace all appropriateparts: gaskets, diaphragm, needle valve, and the small screen.

I have a Ryobi S430 4 stroke Weed Eater Trimmer. How many times do i pump the choke (primer) to start cold?

chokes are an obstruction placed over the inlet to increase the vacuum in the carby and cannot be pressed
Primer bulbs are used to suck fuel through the diaphragms to expell all of the air in the system to allow starting
normally press the primer bulb until it is full of fuel
apply the choke and pull until it fires
remove the choke and at full throttle pull until it starts

Absolutely it can. Weight can slow it down, Friction can slow it down,. There are many things that will do exactly what you are talking but the #1 thing would be a Gummed up Carburator. EVERYONE is having the same problems right now.

    PROPER WAY TO START TRIMMER.

Pump the primer bulb on the carburetor at least 7 times....set choke lever ( the yellow lever on the air cleaner) to the down start position....pull start handle till it fires....let machine run for about 30 to 45 seconds before you open the throttle to give it a chance to warm up....that's it !!! ;-D

    It wont start

First, make sure that the gas mixture is correct (gas and oil mixed in the right proportion). Next, press the primer bulb 3-4 times, turn the choke lever on to Full Choke, and pull the starter cord until the engine seems like to wants to start, but dies. Next, switch the choke lever to Half Choke and start the gas trimmer, giving it gas by pulling on the trigger. Once it has warmed up fully, you may be able to reduce the Half Choke to No Choke, although my 20+ years of experience with dozens and dozens of models tells me that many trimmers run better, although smoking slightly, when you keep them at Half Choke. One last tip, when pulling the cord, try pushing the trimmer away from you with the opposite hand at the exact same time that you are pulling the starter cord--the equal and opposite push-pull technique may sound like something from karate (and it is, in a way), but it is really helpful when trying to start trimmers. Best of luck, Bill

PS: Check you owner's manual (at home or online) for the proper gas/oil mixture. Empty any old gas out and replace the spark plug, if required.

you need to adjust the high speed needle turn it out in 1/4 increments as you throttle it, low speed may have to come out alittle but do high speed first. I had to answer this as I use to have a pastor john in sturgeon bay, miss him alot.

My weed eater will start but when I push on throttle it dies

well take the spark plug out take some WD40 and give it a shot inside the unit, remember to keep the unit level when hitting the throttle and allowing it to warm up for a few minutes before use also make sure where your choke lever is. also when starting I start it on the ground like most manuals state and leave it idle on the ground for a minute before picking it up and then when I pick it up I make sure that the gas tank is tilted towards the ground so there is no room for air to get into the filter causing and disturbance while the unit is warming up.
