This may be a little late but the answer is "there is no battery". The whole face except for the display is a solar cell. Use it in plenty of light and it will stay on. If you block the light while using it and the internal storage cap has a small charge on it the display will turn off.
Digital micrometers with LCD displays usually do not have a power on.off feature. Older units have an "on" button only that is used to turn them back on after a predetermined time-out or period if inactivity to conserve battery capacity but newer Mitutoyo mics cannot be turned off.
Normally you would adjust it to the part being measured then press the 'Zero' button to zero out the display. Now every time you measure the same type of part, it should read zero or the dimension plus or minus from that zero point.

Sounds like the new battery you installed is no good. Is the display also dim? When the battery is low that is one of the results on the Mitutoyo. Do you have another battery to try in it?
