My mothers Kenmore countertop microwave oven caught on fire late one evening. She remembers nothing of the fire circumstances as she was in a burn center for six weeks. My sister had the same model microwave & it also caught fire during the day during normal use. Is there a recall? Our insurance folks took the microwave but did not followup as I had hoped they would. Any issues with Kenmore's out there?

    I just reported my Kenmore, that started running all by itself yesterday, to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It was so hot I couldn\'t pick it up to move it. I can see how it would have burned my house down. Sorry for your mother. Report it to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

There is a GE/Kenmore recall: http://injurylaw.reganfirm.com/2007/12/articles/defective-products/cpsc-notice-ge-ge-profile-kenmore-microwave-ovens-recalled/. I don't know if your relative's models are involved. I suggest that you file an incident report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Can the GE 3-in-1 Countertop microwave be installed inside a cabinet?
No, because it is an Air Fryer and Broiler as well. It would generate too much heat and no where for it it escape. You would need to use it on a counter as described or buy an over the range model.

I have a frigidaire gallery microwave, lately it smells like wires burning when I use it,,, it is around 5 years old..
if it smells like wire burning, shut down the microwave immediately. give it the sniff test by sniffing around microwave to ensure smell is coming from microwave, check receptacle also. The microwave may not worth repairing bases on age and what a comparable new model cost. If receptacle call electrical to inspect and repair. What would you do if it caught fire,your life and home are worth more than a microwave.

I haven't heard of such a thing. You must have cooked it until there was no moisture left in the potato. That would also account for the failure of the oven. It would be the same as no load in the oven.
A thermal protect part is your current problem.

Microwave caught fire inside parts compartment.
Most likely causes are a shorted high voltage rectifier or burned-up high voltage transformer. Visual inspection should indicate which one. Be wary of the high voltage capacitor - some keep a charge of 4000 volts, or more, even when unit is unplugged.

The microwave oven is not safe to use, the fire has compromised the interior of the oven, if you run the microwave it will start to arc and eventually short out the magnetron, because the white enamel paint has been burned away. If you have holes in the ceiling there is danger of radiation leakage, for safety reasons the oven should be replaced.
