Why is my apollo welder/generator keep burning avr

This small amount is used to create an electromagnet. As the engine begins to turn this electromagnet, moving its electric field, through the stator windings, your generator will produce more power. However, if residual magnetism is lost, your generator will produce no power at startup.

If I understand your problem, you replace the AVR only to have it go bad after only ! hour. This is a very strong indication that the winding of the rotating field has a short circuit . If you do nor have meters and equipment to test, try this trick. In the wiring from the regulator to the slipring brushes, cut the wire and splice in a automotive fuse holder with a 3 amp fuse. If you run the unit and it blows the fuse, you then know the problem. Hope this helps you, Robert

Hi, a word of caution, use a 9volt battery instead of 12v to check the rotating field winding. The 12volts from a car battery or battery charger can burn out windings in a generator. I would say that your avr is pooched. There are 4 leads that go back to the windings in the generator from the AVR. Two of these are connected to the power output and two go to a separate winding in the generator. This is the exciter winding and this supplies power to the avr for the rotating field. The two to the power output are voltage reference only. If your generator has these exciter winding, you should check if you have voltage there with the 9 volts applied to the rotor. If you have voltage on the power output and not on the exciter, then the exciter is shot and your avr might not be. Try this first, if you could, could you take a picture of the windings at the back end of the generator, this will confirm for me what leads you have present.

Have you let it set for a long period? I have heard that if you do not use a generator that it will simply stop working(generator portion itself). Make sure no breakers are tripped and the wiring looks OK.

measure ouput on ALL available sockets - anything?
Take cover off electric motor-generator, visually inspect windings.
Measure continuity of all stator windings (2 or 3 points usually)
Measure continuity of stator thru brushset.
If all measures ok - has to be AVR module.

There is no mistery in generator - just stator to induce and rotor to obtain voltage.

sounds like a voltage regulation problem with the generator

probably the AVR card produced over-powering and then went down...try replacing it..

AVR burn out is the most popular problem with electricity supplyment....
replace the AVR...if it burnt out shortly after words..then u have a problem with the rpm of the engine...if not..then its just a AVR burnout..

The power wires are usually numbered 11 & 22 (one winding) and 33 & 44 (the other winding) Because it makes 190VAC on one side only I'd suspect that the AVR output got burned trying to force the rotor to make voltage it couldn't sense. If I remember correctly the AVR will have wires 11 & 22 connected to it as the sense input, so if that side of the stator is open or shorted, or if the sense wires got broken the AVR will be mased out trying to get the right voltage.
