Carburetor probably needs removed and cleaned and while at it check and replace if necessary fuel lines also check fuel tank for trash and clean if necessary.

no -- the drive in the curved shaft is a twisted cable ( like a speedo cable) and the load applied by attachments curls the cable up and breaks it
you can however change the curved shaft to a straight shatf ( visit sites that have wrecked trimmers ) and the drive in them is a solid bar
Some dumps have a shop on site that sells items collected from the tip that you can make good units out of several or try garage /flea/trash and treasure sales to get cheap parts for the conversion
