SOURCE: stairmaster climber model 4600 pt pedals go all

Unplug dc power connection then remove right side panel check for loose connections on on alternator, check distance of speed sensor to speed sensor disc you should no more than 3 credit card distance between them. Next remove the black wire from the B+ terminal on the alternator, then remove the brown wire from the field terminal on the alternator.Place a short wire with alligator clips between B+ and field terminals start stepping for about 10 to 15 second you should full resistance in that case its the upper console that if not replace alternator

I have a Stairmaster 4000 PT. Both pedals sank simultaneously while I was on it and went limp as if the chain broke, but it didn't. Is there a common cause? Haven't opened up casing yet.

There are several potential causes. One is that the clutch mechanism that allows the steps to 'pump' the flywheel has suffered an internal failure, possibly a sprag failure; another is that the drive from the clutch to the resistance has broken (I don't recall if that is a chain or belt on the 4000)

Rather than troubleshoot from distant memory, here's a link to the service manual:

Replacement Parts for Fitness Exercise Equipment at SPORTSMITH My pedals on my Stairmaster are frozen in the top position, what do I check?
  1. Remove the alternator belt. IF pedals drop, problem is in alternator. IF NOT,
  2. Remove the drive chain, IF pedals drop, problem is in transmission, IF NOT,
  3. Problem is in hub assembly. Replace assembly.

The chains are dry and it smells like it's burning. What type of oil do you use on the chains? Do you think that is the problem?

use transmission oil on the chains and let it soak in . friction can cause the burning smell from old dried up grease

Where in the world is the battery for the Stairmaster 4200 PT? I have read the manual multiple times and taken the cover off and still can not find it. Help!

There is not a battery in this unit. Stairmaster steppers that require a battery are labeled as CL for cordless. The PT machines have a power supply that plugs into the wall.

The chain slips when using the machine - both sides.

This could be the hub assembly slipping I would replace this assembly and the pedal chains call National Gym Supply @ 800-496-7278 and get pricing for the hub assembly and step chain ( L & R )
