This fault indicates that there is too much back pressure on the pump causing the motor to strain. There is a check valve located at the tank that prevents pressurized air from returning to the compressor. Here is how to test for leaking check valve. With no air in the tank, run the compressor till you reach about 40psi and shut off the unit. Listen or air leaking out of the air filter or the pressure switch. Leaking air indicates bad check valve. If no leak, allow the compressor to reach fail condition, then unplug the compressor and immediately let out all the air and see if the compressor restarts easily. If the compressor will not restart with no air in the tank then may have failing capacitor (s). Easy to replace. ;Good luck with your repair.

The same thing happened to me before if the paint is too thick. Another reason was when the gun toppled over and paint went into the spring and needle in which case you will have to take it apart and clean it.

i have the same one and mine was broken by my kids , i had to replace the entire component, DONT RUN COMPRESSOR with out the regulator working IT CAN EXPLODE IF OVERFILLED,a must fix situation i believe i got mine from sears , a great unit ive used it painting and with many air tools over many years now , well worth fixing mine is a little loud but dependable good luck.
SOURCE: compressor runs hot and won't build pressure
THE COPPER LINE IS SUPPOSED TO GET HOT, SCALDING HOT ACTUALLY. THE MOST COMMON REASON FOR COMPRESSORS NOT BUILDING PRESSURE IS CLOGGED AIR FILTER OR THE VALVES IN THE HEAD ARE BROKEN OR NOT OPENING AND CLOSING CORRECTLY. YOU MAY POSSIBLY HAVE A BAD AIR LEAK DOWNSTREAM BUT YOU CAN CLOSE THE DISCHARGE VALVE ON THE TANK TO ELIMINATE THAT PROBLEM. HOPE THIS HELPS OR GET YOU STARTED.
SOURCE: Air compressor motor stalls under pressure
this sounds like a bad pressure switch.if the unit is not shutting off at the same pressure each time this would be the cause.2 if the pressure is not unloading the air pressure on the compressor side of the unit it will cause the unit to struggle when it starts a cycle because the piston is under a load .how this works is say the unit starts from 0 psi when it get to the desired pressure you have it set on the unit kicks off . the other adjustment most units have on them is what pressure to cycle back on.so when the unit reaches say 100 pounds ,it kicks off and bleeds the air off the compressor side so when it starts back up it wont start up with pressure on the piston.
SOURCE: Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor won't start
The compressor starting problem is common to most of the small portable compressors. Poor design and undersized components are to blame. If you have one of these units i suggest looking into a product called the Smart Start by Conrader Valves. It is interchangeable with the standard air filters and allows the compressor to start without fail. check it out- www.conrader.com.
