I have an old Mr Coffee ecm20 espresso maker. I understand that it is very old, but I'm really trying to get this thing to work. I have delimed it with both CLR and vinegar. Those things come out just fine, the entire amount that I put into the reservoir brews out just fine. When I run just water through to flush it out, less than a quarter of the amount of water I put in brews out, not even a whole espresso shot's worth. A very large amount of steam is escaping from where the coffee comes out (NOT the reservoir cap!) Is there anything I can do to fix this dinosaur or should I just accept the fact that it has defeated me?

You are using cold water, right?

Actually, I use spring water from a gallon, it's room temperature. Could that be my problem?

  • Lauren Hirt Jul 23, 2018

Just tried it with water straight out of the fridge, same problem. Only steam is coming out with very minimal water/coffee. I even put coffee in there just in case that was happening because there was nothing in the filter basket, but I still have the same result.

Sorry I don't have a better suggestion. Unfortunately, sounds like it may just be wearing out ... I have one that is too (not that that helps!)

That's ok, thank you so much for trying though! I really do appreciate it! :)

You have a leak in a connection or maybe the boiler. There is nothing you can do but find a repair shop to fix or replace the bad part.

SOURCE: When brewing, it steams and spits the water out

this is what happened to me, I didn't have the filter basket all the way down so the pot lid didn't open the valve that lets coffee flow so the coffee and grounds ran into the water resevior and plugged the filter, so I did the worst thing possible and took the filter out so the grounds got into the check valve that keeps the hot water going in the right direction. that makes it spit and sputter and brew slow.
after trying to flush it out forever I tore the metal plate on the bottom off and unhooked the rubber hoses (don't do this unless you have a needle nose pliers, you'll never get them back on) one should go to the brew head and the other is the water inlet, this has the check valve. you can tell which is which by blowing through them and seeing which one goes to the brew head. if you can blow through the other one the check valve is stuck open, I blew air into it with an air compresor and this forced the check valve shut and now it works fine. I know this is the same symptons as calcium deposits but I had cleaned it twice.
try flushing it with water first but sometimes it takes extreme measures

SOURCE: Coffee maker brews MUCH slower and makes less coffee

It may not help but won't hurt; put a couple of cups of plain vinegar into the water chamber, turn on briefly until it starts to pump, then turn off and leave overnight - at least, if not longer. The mild acid content may clear some lime buildup.

SOURCE: Saeco Vienna not brewing

I wish I could post a solution, but this is exactly what happened to my machine after about a month of use. I don't see any clog nor a way to get to the moving parts that could create a clog. Unfortunate design.

Where can you buy parts

The on/off switch is not available to retail end users from Mr. Coffee. I checked ereplacementparts.com (which has a good supply of parts for almost anything), and they recommend contacting an authorized Mr. Coffee repair place. (http://www.ereplacementparts.com/coffee-ecm20-espresso-cappuccino-parts-c-116130_116133_116388.html) So if you wanted to do it yourself, you'd have to find an aftermarket switch to use, rather than the OEM.

I need the presure seal for Mr. Coffee Espresso Machine -ECM260al

Pro chef places will have the part, or use an o-ring from the auto parts store.

Steam is escaping from where the lid of the machine screws down and seals with the body of the machine. I see no gaskets to replace. What do I do?

The seal to the reservoir cap is actually inside the cap. The cap (109018-000-000) is still available for the ECM20. We actually only have one left in stock, we have some more on order but right now I only have one. 17f9a8b.jpg
