IF you are just trying to reset the belt at the top and have not remover the crank pulley, bring the crank around to Top dead center on the # 1 cylinder,. It will read Zero degrees on the timing mark scale.
Up top, look at the cam gear closely You will see that there are 5 spokes which support the actual gear. Look closer and you will see that one of these spokes has a small hole in it about 3/4th of the way towards the outside of the gear. Position the gear to where that hole is at 12:00 PM. NOW, if you look thorough the hole, you should should see a small notch that the hole should be centered on. If not, move the gear until you can look through the hole and the notch falls dead center. At that point in time, you have the crank ant camshaft in perfect time with each other.
When you put the belt on, make sure that the side which is slack is the tensioner side. You should be able to slip the belt on, matching the teeth with the teeth on the gears to where one side is fairly tight and you can not roll the cam counter clockwise.
IF you are replacing the belt, you have the crank pulley off and you position the woodruff key straight up at 12:00 PM and the procedures are all the same other than that. when you set the tension. A good rule of thumb is to find the longest span of belt, and with your thumb and forefinger twist the belt. if it twists to 45 degrees toward the block, it's perfect. Any more or less, needs to be reset.

Its been a long time... You are quite right in saying there are no timing marks on the camshaft pulleys.
To set the timing on this particular vehicle you have to set No. 1 piston Bottom Dead Centre.To do this as easily as possible look at the crankshaft pulley. This is sitting behind the damper pulley. Remove the damper pulley and have a close look on the crankshaft pulley.
There is a line engraved on this pulley. That line has to be set to around where 3 o'clock is positioned.
Remove Number 1 and number 2 spark plugs. To check if the number 1 piston is on Bottom Bead Centre place two screw drivers with the same length down the plug holes.
Turn the engine slowly using the mark on the cranshaft pulley as a guide approaching the 3 o' clock postion.
Now watch the two screw drivers, they must reach the same height. If they do reach the same height that means No. 1 piston and No. 2 piston are on the same height.
Piston NO 1 and No. 2 are at equal heigh, BDC.
If you remove the tappet cover and look at the camshafts, the inlet camshaft is engraved INLET and the exhaust camshaft is engraved EXHAUST. Find these engravings they should face upwards and be clearly readable. There are also at the ends of both camshafts a straight groove cut into the camshafts. The inlet camshaft has a four notches on it on the end, this the camshaft sensor reads to dertermine the camshaft timing.
That grooved line on the camshaft must be inline with the other exhaust camshaft. The grooved line is not exactly in half of the camshaft it has an off set.
The smallest of the two divisions must be on the top.
Now both camshaft has this line grooved into them. The top is the smallest division must face to the top. If you positioned both camshafts correctly the grooved line should form one straight line with one another.
In other words if you take a straight edge, and place it in those grooves the straight edge must follow a straight line. If you got this set then the camshaft timing is done.
To lock the camshafts into postion remove two camshaft bearing caps. Place wet sand paper 400 grit paper, but do not wet them, with the rough side onto the camshaft.
Refit the camshaft bearing cap and gently tie down the cap, the grit will act as a locking tool. Do this to both bearing caps on each camshaft.
Make sure the the grooved line is level and tie down the cap gently. Do this with both camshafts. The camshafts are now locked into place. Test with your straight edge, does the grooves follow a straight line?
If not loosen the camshafts caps where the sand paper is located and adjust.
Now fit the camshaft pulleys and tighten to 120 Nm each. This done, mark the pulleys with paint to make future timing belt changes easier.
To make sure the crankshaft does not move, locate the starter. Now move to where the gearbox mates to the engine, almost to where the oil sump is.
Find the 17mm bolt sticking its head out.Remove the bolt. Now that is where the crankshaft locking tool is inserted. Its an 8 mm hole in the crankshaft but the hole is over sized to about 15mm on the engine block.
A drill bit with insuslation tape tightly turned around it until it covers the hole will suffice.
The drill bit inserts to about 80mm before it enters the locking hole in the crankshaft. Make sure the drill bit is a snug fit, turning to the left or to the right on the 22mm crankshaft bolt should result in a no turn of the cranshaft. Crankshaft is locked.
Fit the timing belt.
Do not forget to remove the sand paper at the two camshaft bearing caps on the exhaust and the inlet camshafts. This was your locking tool! Please remove any residue that might remain where the samd paper was used.
Remove the make shift crankshaft locking tool, your taped up drill bit.
With timing belt now installed, turn the cranshaft 2 revolutions and check if your timing is OK. Check if the the grooves on the camshafts are in a straight line, use your straight edge or ruler to confirm.
Re-insert your make shift drill bit into the hole. See if the crankshaft can be turned to the left or the right. If that is all ok, remove your make shift locking tool, your drill bit, replace the 17mm bolt in the engine block. All done.
