SOURCE: Refrig. not cooling properly

if the timer is working the most likely problem is the bi-metal(also called defrost thermostat)it is the disc shaped piece that clamps to the coils behind the back panel.you could also have a problem with the heating element, these items require a multi meter to check

SOURCE: defrost heater does not cycle on

you didn't send the full model number, starts with 110.or similar, you have a defrost problem,it could be a couple of things so you need to read out some parts with a meter, you could have a bad defrost thermostat the timer or adaptive defrost board depending on model number, bad heater,if it has a timer you need to advance it by turning the middle with a screw driver until you hear a click and the fan shuts off in the freezer, now you have it in defrost, see if the heater is on,if it is you have abad timer,if it didn't come on check the t stat,if it has plug in connectors on the wires disconnect the t stat and plug the wire derectly to the heater or if you have to cut the wires cut them and bypass the thermostat,if the heater comes on then you know you have a bad t stat, also pull the wires off the heater and check the heater,if the heater is bad it's a good idea to change out the t stat anyway,if it has an adaptive defrost board check the tech sheet that should be behind or on the bottom kick plate, remove it and look it will tell you how to put the fridge into defrost,i think you push in the both door switches 5 times at the same time,if it doesn't go into defrost could be the board, you'll have to still read out the heater with a meter, also if you read out the thermostat it has to be cold,if it warms up it will read open but it still could be good,if you need any more help with this let me know and send model number so i can help better

SOURCE: Can Automatic Defrost be bypassed on Amana ATB1932MRW

Good day,
Not really effective. In the old days the coils were exposed and could be defrosted relatively quickly.
In a frost free machine the coils are located behind the rear wall of the freezer compartment. That compartment is well insulated and you have no practical way of accessing it.
The bottom line is manually defrosting the frost free
machine involves shutting the machine down completely for about 12 hours, with the freezer door left open. For most people that would cause a lot of food to be lost.

You have made an interesting point. Actually, it's kind of ludicrous to turn on high wattage electric heaters every 12 hours or so to gain automatic defrosting. But that's the world we live in.
Conventional defrost refrigerators are still made, but only come in very small sizes.

Wow
Ican not understand what you need.
So I am guessing here
Ice has built up on the evaporator coil stopping air flow to the food section.
Try manually defrosting the fridge. If this works then the auto defrost cycle has failed and you will need to get a technician to help you

My Amana refrigerator defrost timer is supposed to cycle every eight hours. Instead it takes about 14 hours to cycle around back to the defrost mode. The defrost mode does last for the proper 20 minutes....

Relax, some people exagerate was all I was saying.
Anyhow, go to a good parts store and ask for a Supco EDT (Electronic Defrost Timer) replacement as they are more reliable and not much difference in price.

Refrigerator section on side by side losing cooling

Here is the Amana website with the manuals which should show you where the defrost timer etc. is located. Witht your model number and manual it will be a lot easer

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search.jsp?siteCd=AMA

And yes the defrost timer thermostat and heater are the most likely problem.

Do not let this keep running and running or you may lose your compressor too which means a lot more expense than now.

Freezer leaks water!

luvbug, Your refrigerator is "frost free" which means it is automatically defrosts after the compressor runs 8 to 12 hours. The defrost cycle lasts approximately 30 minutes. If it is in normal condition, defrosted water goes through the drain into the drip pan under the refrigerator and then evaporates. The problem you are having is one of the most common - the drain line is clogged up. To fix it you have to remove the freezer drawer, defrost and clean the drain. The drawer removal procedure described in the refrigerator manual book. If you do not have one you can find it there: http://www.amana.com/amana/jsp/manual.do You will see the drain hole on the freezer floor by the rear panel. To defrost it you can use your hair dryer. To make sure it is open, run a cup of very hot water through the drain. Reinstall the freezer drawer and enjoy it! Gendos....post it back
