There are several things that could cause this:
1. The relay (contactor) that switches on the arc is not closing and it could be bad.
2. The diodes in the power supply are bad.
3. The low voltage transformer is bad.
Check the dial indicator. Sometimes if someone changes the amps while welding, there will be a break in the coil. It will work at a different setting as long as you are away from the break.
maybe its your volts too. make sure you are grounded properly and clean from debri's, strike the electrode like a match and keep the arc close to your work-piece. dont go too fast and make sure your not wearing to strong of a lens in your hood. gold lens number 10 are the best for 7018 rods.
Transformer is burned out. Various windings are taken off at different points to alter the amount of power, they have eventually burned right through , So that is why some worked and some didn't It has now completely gone. The cost to replace the transformer may well exceed the cost of a new welder.
Sounds to me like the Power Controller has gone bad. These are a real tricky, dangerous, things to fix yourself, I recommend that you call the service rep, for Power Mate,and cut your losses.
