Goodman horizontal furnace Can I power Off, and then, after five minutes, On, without any other additional operations? I need to install a new thermostat.

Yes, You can safely power cycle the unit without any adverse issues.

One of two things you can try. Do you own a volt ohm meter? Anytime your unit cycles short like it is doing the control circuit which on this one is 24 volts that engages relays and controls the gas valve to open and close. I am thinking the heat exchanger is getting so hot it is tripping the upper limit which for the most part is around 180 degrees. So next time it turns off take your ohm meter and with the power to the whole unit off. Either turn the breaker off or there is a light switch that is real close to unit turn it off. Undo the two wires to the gas valve and ohm them out. You should have continuity if you get nothing check each limit switch should have a couple. Undo wires to them and check. If you find one that is open more then likely the upper one. They are a safety device that keeps the unit from getting too hot.

There might be another option increase the speed of your fan motor to get the heat out of furnace quicker. Look at the circuit board notice the fan wiring going to it. The Red wire from fan is low speed look to see if it is on HEAT on the board. You should have 4 speeds to pick from you could take the black off of COOL and swap wires and test the unit by doing that. I'm going to put a solution on this so I can come back to it quicker. Even though we a just testing it for now. ken

check to see if your intake pipe or vent is clear this could cause a flame jump and make it look like a bad flame sensor let me know if this helps

Yes, but I'd wait 10 minutes before applying power to the AC unit after installing the new thermostat. This will allow equalizing the pressure in the system.

Any light flashin on the control board? If not then look for a small fuse blown on the board. See lights a flashing count them flashes

A sampling of various failure codes on a furnace:

Read one LED flash that stays on continuously to mean your furnace has no signal coming from the thermostat and will not operate. Turn the power off and check the thermostat for improper settings or connections.

Interpret one LED flash that blinks on and off to mean your furnace has locked out because it could not ignite after three tries, and must be reset. Interrupt power to your furnace for 20 seconds or lower the thermostat so your furnace does not try to heat, then reset the thermostat to the previous setting. After one hour of lockout, your furnace will automatically reset itself and try to operate as usual.

Decipher two LED flashes to mean the draft blower is not working, or your furnace has a short in the pressure switch circuit. Turn off the furnace power and repair a short or replace the pressure switch.


Read three LED flashes to mean your furnace has an open pressure switch circuit or it has an induced draft blower operating. Check the pressure switch hose of your furnace for blocks or an improper connection. Also, look for blockages in the flue, and tighten any loose wiring.

Translate four LED flashes to mean your furnace has a primary limit circuit open, possibly from loose wiring or blocked filters. Check and clean filters, tighten wiring and check the flue for blockages.

Interpret five LED flashes to mean your furnace senses a flame without a call for heat. This could be from a gas valve closing slowly or a burner flame lingering.



Read seven LED flashes as a warning of a low flame sense microamp signal. This could happen with a coated flame sensor or a lazy flame from poor gas pressure. Turn off the power and adjust the gas pressure according to the information on the rating plate.



See eight LED flashes as meaning an igniter circuit problem due to a bad igniter or an igniter connected improperly. Replace the bad igniter or check the ground wiring, making necessary corrections.



Decipher nine LED flashes to mean the high-stage pressure switch circuit will not close during a high-stage-induced draft blower operation. Your furnace may have a pinched or blocked pressure switch hose, a blocked flue or loose wiring.

Read continuous flashing on the LED to mean your furnace has a reversed polarity of 115 volts. Turn off the power and correct the wiring polarity after reviewing the wiring diagram.

I have a Goodman GMP 125-5 furnace. It had a 3 light code i replaced the presure switch now it is giving me a 1 light code please help

The furnace will kick on and the burners will keep going out the process will continue unless i shut the power to the furnace off for five minutes then cut it back onit will run good but the problem will...


check your air filter, a very dirty filter will cause the unit to over heat "180'" The burners turn off the unit cools itself with the blower and then relights.

I'm not sure of the exact model of my Goodman furnace, but here is the problem. The new furnace was installed this summer (2010) and it is mounted in the space under the house in Big Bear Lake, CA....


I suppose this furnace is fueled by Natural Gas?
(Or is it Propane-- Bottled gas?)

Did the Service company leave you any manual, with your new furnace?
and I would think there was a warranty, for assuring you (the customer) satisfaction, no?
Have you called the people who sold/installed it?
What do they say?

If they did leave a manual-- what does it suggest for narrowing down your possible problems?
Like: Low Fuel-- Low Voltage- Filter Changes, Fan switch problems- or ignition failure problems?

For a new furnace, someone should be right there to do a start-up for you!

Well if it takes a while to act up it's probably overheating, drain issues, or a component failure like a weak high temp limit. That unit has a full variable speed blower motor, so airflow is critical for proper operation. What kind of trouble codes are present when it fails?

No. The installers did not properly plumb you hose. You have a high efficient furnace which is really nice. However, this furnace takes out moister from the air when heating, causing condensation. I would look at the installation manual and see if they installed them properly. They might of installed the wrong unit for you home. Most Goodman furnaces can only be installed up-flow meaning in the closet or horizontal installed meaning in the attic. Look at the installation manual to see if they installed the right unit for your home. www.fastacservice.com

Keep in mind all furnaces and circuit boards are not the same. Look on the back of the door to the blower compartment. You should find the list of diagnostic codes. Look up four blinks it should narrow down the problem. Although from the discription you gave it sounds lie the high limit control. When a high limit appears to be acting up it DOES NOT mean that the high limit needs replaced. The high limit just may be doing its job. This means that the furnace is overheating. Check your filters. Are all of your registers open? Is your blower set on the right speed? Is your blower going bad? Is the blower motor capacitor bad? Is your evaporator coil restricted? Just changing a high limit switch does not always solve the original problem!
