Whatever it is, it sticks to the walls of the trap and builds up until I get a backup. I can easily remove it by hand. At first I thought it was cooking grease, but I put some in a tin can and heated it on the stove - it does not melt. I would appreciate: 1 any ideas as to what this could be, and 2 does anyone know of any lab that could analyze this for me? thanks Frank

Some components can be replaced from the front, but not the high voltage parts including the magnetron.
You can download GE
owner's manuals and installation instructions here. They make it easier to remove from the wall.
You can usually find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number here.
There
should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
If
it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years)
but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your
manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or
the labor charge to do the work.
Some manufacturers will
send you the magnetron to do it yourself. If
nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.
GE Customer Service is here if you want to request a magnetron.

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.
(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side the magnetron)))
SOURCE: Microwave will not cook
Sounds like the magnetron has failed. There are some high voltage circuits that feed the magnetron and you can potentially get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Would recommend you have it serviced by a professional if you want it fixed, otherwise look for a new one since the cost of repair can come close to the price of a new microwave oven.

This
is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch
mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.
Even though a door
switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.
Door switch
or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening
the
door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.
There are
plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and
onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.
The screws on these
mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be
activated properly.
Sometimes it's
a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just
out of position. This tab
can be hard to see, since it is under the
bottom edge of the switch.
If the switch mount is
broken, it's usually more economical and
safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the
switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.
One test that sometimes
helps is to
gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to
start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount
or
door alignment issue.
If you or someone you
know decide to look

switches at our site.

thanks much for the input.....I'm in NYC (City water which isn't hard)and have 3 houses all on the same street (for 40 yrs already). This is the on;y house that has ever had anything like this block the trap....
also kinda agree with Clive it might be laundry detergent many over use powdered type and it might not be dissolving as it should. ask tenants to use liquid only . see if problem goes away
thanks for the thought Ray, but got to cross this one off - washing machines are not allowed in the building
Many people take vitamins and the excess is peed out causing a white ppt. which lines many sewer systems in our countries. 2ndly, the toilet paper from Costco has plugged many sewer systems when the lines are not large enough to handle the mash. The high rise apt. bldg. I was in refused to allow high/low flush toilets for this reason and asked people not to buy toilet paper from Costco.
