Doesn't sound good. Maybe the hand is loose on the spindle or has become disengaged but is prevented from falling off altogether by the cover glass. If neither of those has happened there is something wrong with the mechanism.
The absence of the battery won't be the cause.
I suggest you take the watch back to your "friend" and tell him you don't want it but you might think again if he has it repaired...
This is a mechanical issue not the battery. The watch hand has come loose from the post, you may want to consult a repairman if you feel it is worth it.
The second hand has fallen off of the shaft and has to be put back if you want to read off the minutes.

back screws off (you can get the correct tools or bodge with opened long nose pliers)
battery is GP377 50-99p each, you need 2, the 'seconds tic' will **** juice and last about 6 months, the time one will last 12 months + so buy 3-4 batteries.

I had the same problem with my Tag. Same 4 second jump. It's definitely the battery. I'm surprised at only 3 months, but maybe it sat a while in the display case. Mine was over a year and a half.
SOURCE: Second hand doesnt move
Sounds like a job for Fossil!
Go to their web site "www.fossil.com" and at the bottom of their page is a menu which includes "store locator".
SOURCE: the second hand is not moving
make sure your mode is on time and not calender. if on calendar it sticks on the present month and does not move.
SOURCE: i have a sport watch
Your watch is Chronograph watch and the big centre seconds hand is for chronograph function only - not day to day seconds counting. Check the small dials and you will see that the small seconds hand is already counting seconds- this small one is seconds counter. To engage chrono hand push the upper push button once. To stop it - push the same button again. to return to zero- push lower button.
