I want to update the software on my iphone 4s because my itunes software is out of date and does not allow me to connect to wi-fi?

Several things you can try...

To check for updates, tap Settings > General > Software Update. You can also connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iTunes and click Check for Update on your device's Summary page. To check that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station.

1. That your date, time, and time zone are correct. Tap Settings > General > Date & Time. Time Zone might list another city in your time zone.
2. That your iOS software is up to date. To check for updates, tap Settings > General > Software Update. You can also connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iTunes and click Check for Updateon your device's Summary page.

If there's still an issue, learn what to do if your device won't connect to a Wi-Fi network.

When you do all updates make sure you're using a Wi-Fi- connection, a 3G connection is too slow.

Well, that depends. You didn't say what iOS version you want to upgrade to or which version you have right now. I'm not even sure if that model is an iPhone 4 or a 4s. If you go into Settings and find the General setting, look for the Version. If you have iOS 5.1 or above you should be able to find the Software Update in the General settings. iOS 4 did not have this option. The Software Update feature lets you download the upgrade over wi-fi

The preferred method would be to use iTunes on a computer to do the update. Just plug the USB part of you charging cord into the computer and iTunes should recognize it (make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer). ITunes will also let you make a backup on the computer before doing an upgrade, which is important.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
