I have a 1987 2355 john deere Serial#LO2355R611453. the pto quit working. It started out with the pto lever would not engage with out shutting of the engine, it would just grind otherwise,
Now if even with the engine off or the clutch fully depressed it will not engage, lever moves but pto does not worrk

I would remove the PTO switch and have a Deere dealer test it. Also on the 500 series the PTO operates through the ignition control module which is under the dash, you can see it when you raise the hood. It is black and about 2" wide x 3" long and 1" thick.
Maybe the travel speed is too high for it or the fusible link in starting circuit is blown.Check and adjust timing belt tension if necessary.Visit john deere expert or dealer.
There are 2 safety switches on that unit as well. Most of them are right below the steering column in the firewall area. Search that to see if that unit has them. I'd be willing to bet one of them is faulty. Most are just a push button type.
percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.
The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.
