If you are referring to updating the firmware, you should go to Garmin's website, www.garmin.com and download the WebUpdater software first. Once that is installed, plug your unit into your computer and then run the software.
Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps? Does it lock up or stop working?
This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.
A hard reset (or Clear All User Data)has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit. It's also one of the first things that Garmin will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior.
Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:
The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.
From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
On the next power cycle, the Favorites will beread from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on theNuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:
*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit
Power the unit off.
Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
Install the battery.
Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.
If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.
You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.
Your Nuvi should not need to be able to power up for a firmware update to be possible - replacing the firmware should allow it to power up successfully after the update.
If your Garmin NUVI 205 can be recognized by your computer when plugged in, I recommend you backup your favorites.
Then I suggest a hard reset. This correct some problems.
Finally, replace the firmware and system software using webupdate. Replacing the firmware should allow it to find more satellites more quickly and keep them more successfully after the update.
you might have to register on the website before downloading..its been awhile since i did an update, but the to web updater is very easy to use, just download it and install it on your computer then run it to check for updates. just follow the on screen instructions.
I just got an answer from Garmin Support Germany and they
sent me an file which fixed the problem. Just download
http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2x5/nuvi205_085101000280en.rar
It contains a "Updater.exe" and a file called "085100010270.rgn".
Follow the following steps and you should have your nüvi back.
Firstly
connect your broken nüvi. Then drag and drop the 085100010270.rgn on
the updater.exe. Choose USB as a connection and it should put an old
firmware back on your device.
I had the same problem. I went onto Garmin.com and attached the Nuvi to the computer using a cord that I had for my blackberry phone. Once connected, I turned on the Nuvi and ran the update tool. The update tool will reinstall the voices. This seemed to work the first time. I have had to do this twice now since I received the Nuvi 205 on December 26, 2008 (it's February 13, 2009)
