Skype puts a huge drain on the battery, when the battery is under this type of load demand it gets hot. Make sure the battery doesn't look swollen, if it is remove it and put it in safe fire proof container and dispose of it as hazardous waste.

According to the 10428 manual from Safety 1st: "When the battery is exhausted. Dispose of the thermometer as the battery is non-replaceable. Be aware of any local regulations concerning disposal of this product. The battery cover is sonic-welded to the main housing of the thermometer, the battery is well sealed inside the thermometer to reduce the risk of being swallowed by children."
It sounds like you have a bad battery in your laptop. If your laptop is several years old you will probably need to replace the battery. I've seen many cases where the laptop will work when plugged into AC power, but not with battery only. Batteries Plus is a good place to find them and they will properly dispose of your old battery also. Don't throw the old one in the trash - please dispose of it properly - Save the Planet! Sorry I can't directly help with your problem but I advise you the repair cost at a repair shop would probably cost nearly as much as a replacement...
Unless you have a handy friend who works cheaply you won't lose anything by repairing it yourself. You will probably find some useful how-to videos to help you on Youtube.
