A popping sound is a normal sound on frost free refrigerators. A burning smell could indicate a lot of things, a dust build up on the compressor. In your case, since the light went out, it is possible that an electrical wire got damaged.

How do I replace my freezer light

An owners manual I found online says:
Freezer

Pinch rear tabs on light cover and pull straight down.
Remove light bulb.
Replace bulb with appliance bulb no greater than 40 watts.
Insert front tabs of light cover into freezer liner and snap rear portion over light assembly until rear tabs engage.

The manual illustrates the bulb is behind a plastic grille right by the temperature control knob.

Amana fridge replacment bulbs not working

You pretty much answered your own question. If the remaining working bulb works in the socket and if the base seems to be not long enough on the replacement bulbs - there is most likely a problem (or by design) - with the bulbs. The best way to be sure is to ensure the correct bulb type - c6, c9 etc.

the cover over the light bulb should have a squeeze tab a each end from left to right. Squeeze the cover and it should come out

Yes, if the maytag part fits, then it may work in the Amana refrigerator. It's just a switch that carries the current for the light bulb.

First use a volt meter to check for power inside the light fixture.
If there is no power,replace the push button switch in the door opening.
