A glitch may have altered your paper settings. Go into Setup/Device Settings/Cassette settings/Paper to make sure the settings are correct. unfortuantely according to canon website, if turning it off/on doesn't clear the error then it will require a "repair service". Doesn't acutally say what the problem is I'm afraid.

The error indicates a service error code with your printer, typically caused due to internal error in one of the ASIC chips on the logic board of your printer, and may only be repaired by replacing the logic board at an authorized Canon service center, and should be done for free if your printer is still under warranty.

The error code 5C00 means the purge unit is broken. To fix this, you have to bring the printer to a Canon service center and need to replace it with new one.

Those two are error codes, and they mean the following:

E8 - The waste ink absorber is almost full. Press the OK button to clear the error.
Printing can be done until the waste ink absorber becomes full. If the waste ink absorber becomes full, please contact your local Service Center for replacement of the absorber and machine maintenance.
The waste ink absorber is a part inside the machine, which absorbs ink used in the cleaning operations, etc.
