I asked the other day about a Massey-Ferguson TO-35 power steering problem. At a dead stop, the front wheels wobble back and forth violently.

They stop when I idle the engine down and will work normally until the steering is turned past mid-point.

1998 voyager front tires wobble back and forth when jacked up. Is it tie rod or ball bearing?

If it wobbles with your hands at 9 and 3, its a tie rod end.
If it wobbles with your hands at 12 and 6, its a wheel bearing.

Steering wheel and tire issue

Have a front end suspension check done to eliminate any worm ball joints -shockies- worn suspension rubbers-- steering problems. If ok have a wheel alignment done and have the rear end aligned first as it affects the front alignment. The violent wobble is castor wobble and indicates negative castor possible from sagging suspension springs. The camber is out at that results in the car following every dip in the road. The camber has to work in conjunction with the toe-in measurement and if the 2 are not correct then you will have problems.

Kia rio steering wheel is locked and won't turn

Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

I had a chev truck do that once . It was the tires were out of balance. A friend of mine had to put stablizer shock on the steering tie rod to stop his. It looks like a long shock that mounts to the frame and the tie rod shaft. Good Luck

You might jack up the truck on the side, leaving one front wheel on the ground, the other suspended. Have someone watch the steering components close to the suspended wheel while another moves the steering back and forth at a medium rate and look for 'unnatural' movements of joints. Do both sides to check.
This sounds like a tie rod end that is shot and these are fairly easy to spot since the joint will move in directions that are obviously wrong.
The reason it doesn't want to stop is that when one wheel is no longer being held rigidly, it will 'oscillate' causing the violent shaking. The boost from power steering worsens the problem. It can be dangerous; a friend had a worn tie rod end come apart while barreling down the Freeway. Steering with one wheel doesn't work. He survived but no longer ignores the signs.
If you had brought the truck to a decent front-end alignment shop, they would have found this while trying (it doesn't work) to align it.

Cgeck for play in the track bar , it goes from frame to front diff. Get a friend to move the steering wheel from left to right ( engine off ) about an 1/8 of a turn back and forth and watch for play in the steering and suspension parts. good luck.

Ok, I figured out what was wrong with my 2005 Wrangler. By installing the coil spring spacers, I reduced the actual Caster angle of my front end. When I hit certain bumps at certain speeds, the front wheels would wobble back and forth violently as if i was pushing a bad shopping cart really fast. Anyhow, the dealer has replacement eccentric bolts to adjust the caster, but they didn’t stock them and they cost over $50.00. So, I opted to make my own off set washers to push the lower portion of the axle forward (gaining positive Caster). If you think this may help you, feel free to contact me at [email protected] .
