I have a craftsman mini tiller that won't start. I have replaced the spark plug, used fresh fuel (oil mix), checked the air filter, and cleaned the carborator. What could possibly be wrong?

SOURCE: Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.

SOURCE: Engine won't keep running when using the throtle.

Hi Don. There are two adjustment screws on the carburetor. Start the engine and while it is idling, turn the screw closest the engine (low speed adjustment) counterclockwise until it starts to falter, then back a 'hair' and try the throttle again. If that doesn't work, I would recommend doing what I usually do... put a new carb on and be done with it! Carb is a Zama C1U-K54A

SOURCE: Tecumseh ohv130 engine wont start.

Replace the carburetor. It is not fixable, even though you can buy a rebuild kit for it. Been there, done that-- had to learn the hard way. What?? I said to myself. I've been fixing these small engines (shade tree) for years, and we always could rebuild the carb and adjust for peak performance. I absolutely refused to believe that my "rebuild" didn't "fix" this carb. Hard to believe, but true. Replace the carburetor. This is your "something new" you've learned for today.

SOURCE: Mantis tiller 2 cycle will not accelerate. idles

I would pull the tines off of the transmission. You probably have some debris wrapped around the transmission drive shaft(s).
Please let me know.

Tiller will not start. This is a hard one.

Caveats when using starter fluid.

The carburetor must not flood the cylinder with fuel. A flooded engine will not fire, even on starter fluid. If you're not sure, pinch off the fuel line and drain the carburetor bowl. Remove the spark plug and pull recoil several times to dry out the cylinder.

Remove air filter, set choke full open, spray a short burst of fluid directly into the carb throat. Promptly pull starter.

Use a new dry spark plug. If it does not fire, try gapping plug 0.005" shorter and repeat above procedure.

Comment for further assistance.

Just stopped running, changed fuel tank, spark gapped at .025 , air filter, added new fuel still won't throttle up and is hard to start. What's next?

If you have a fuel bowl on the bottom of carb remove the cup and clean well and clean the fuel jet as well. If its even partly plugged The engine will not run right.

Sears Craftsman mower 17hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Replaced starter, spark plug and fuel filter. Will not turn over unless jump started. When running has no power.

Charge battery to 12.8 volts or higher. 13.2 best. Below 12.8 volts replace battery. USE FRESH GAS ONLY. Always use Stabile in gas. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Clean or replace air filter.

I have a sears 2 cycle mini tiller that worked great for the first hour but now won't start.

Do not use pre-mix fuel. Clean carburetor. Check age of gas. Cannot be more than 30 days old.
Make sure to use fresh gas w/synthetic 2-cycle oil @ 40:1 ratio (1 gal.) Gas to 3.2 oz. Oil) .Do not use old or stale oil/gas mixture. Always use the proper oil/gas mix. If you do not, your engine will suffer rapid, permanent damage.

Will not get to working speed

RECOMENDATIONS:

-Drain all fuel from the fuel tank.
-Remove and REPLACE with a NEW spark plug.
-Remove and RELPACE with a NEW Air filter.
-With spark plug and air filter removed and fuel drained pull the starting cord many times 12 or so to ensure there is no fuel in the chamber and also check for a spark at the plug.
-RE-MIX WITH NEW FUEL your 2 cycle oil to the correct ratio in a clean fuel can. it is OK to dump some in the fuel tank slosh around and dump out in an approved container for disposal.
-Hold off on putting back on the air filter until you have had it running

Hope this tip helps.

Tiller has sat in weater for a year. I changed the spark plug, and found there was water or gas in the oil (lots of it) i drained the oil and put in fresh but now it wont even start. what is my problem or...

You need a few things for a combustion engine to work. Firstly you are going to need to know a little about engines and how they work.
Fuel - try draining the tank and putting fresh fuel in it - fues does go stale. This will include fuel in the carburetor so that needs drained too. There was liquid, assuming water in the oil, perhaps it is in the fuel too.
Fire - do you get a spark to the spark plug? Pull the plug out and see if you get spark when trying to start - remember the earth of the spark plug needs to be touching the grounded metal such as the engine or frame. Perhaps the electricals have been water damaged.
Air - clean out the air filter and surrounds.
You have already drained the oil and replaced it - good start.
Maybe something has corroded since it has been in the weather for so long.
If it still does not want to start, try pulling out the plug & trying to start - is anything spitting out the spark plug hole? If so, what?
Once that is clean and clear and it still doesn't start but you have spark, try putting a bit of fuel carefully in the plug hole, say half a tablespoon.
How does that go?
