There are principally two chief causes for this type (calibration) of burn failure:

Inadequate quality media (disks). Verbatim is always a solid choice. However, more important than the brand-name disks are sold under, is the actual manufacturer. You can determine this with the aid of a little software tool called "DVD Identifier". There is an entire sub-culture devoted to tracking the best media available, right down to the manufacturing lot level.

Drive failing. Since you say that it works consistently otherwise, this option is unlikely.
