Get a gater head for your trimmer. It has 4 easy to replace strings, that when broke off you can make up a new set with a pair of side cutters, or just replace 1,2, or 3, I put one on my homelite and it's the best thing i've seen since sliced bread.
you need to locate the black knob at the trimmer head and turn it coun ter clockwise and remove it to access your string spool you may have to chase the knob with pliers because some are more than hand tight
