The two plastic brackets connecting the top to back are broken. The back panel is modestly bent at the bracket screw holes so I cannot replace the brackets. I need to remove top to straighten back panel metal with a clamp or vise-grips.
What is the purpose of the plastic brackets? Is the machine safe to operate with the brackets broken?
Thank you.
Get it straight from the manufacturer. Your warranty info and owner's manual are here:

Open the lid on the washing machine and place your hand between the drum and thetop of the machine. Lift upward and toward you to remove the metal cabinet. If the cabinet does not lift easily, slide it toward the front of the machine, then lift. Be careful not to dent the casing as you take it away from the drum.
No... it is not safe to operate with the top loose...

Then find you EXACT MACHINE.

SOURCE: How do I get inside this DLE5977
There are 3 screws across the back of the top. The lid then slides back and comes off. From there it gets alot more complicated because you end up taking the front off and the bracket behind that then you can lift out the drum.
SOURCE: replace bearing
You can try a puller but typically it is recommended to replace the entire rear outer tub half (which comes with the bearings already pressed into it). You will also need the tub seal that goes between the front and rear tub halves. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: How do I remove the top of my LG WM2496HSM washer?
Code will not tell which is faulty. To remove top: after removing three phillips head screws (leaving the L shaped part attached to the top) slide the top back about one and a half inches and lift it straight up.
SOURCE: lp conversion for LG dryer
After removing the three screws which pass through the L bracket into the back of the dryer:
Stand in front of the dryer and (using the palms of your hands) give the top a sharp push back on the dryer top at the left and right side of the top. The top should slide back 1 to 2 inches. Now lift the top off.
If you post again with further questions, make sure to post under the model number you have. (you posted using a combo washer / dryer, and stated you are converting to LP, which combo units are not gas.)

The back panel does not come off. If you have a rear control model as pictured in your post: Open the door and remove the two phillips head screws at the 5 and 7 O'Clock position just in front of the lint tilter. Next, use a putty knife to push in on the clips holding the top panel down. They are located in the seam where the front panel meets the top panel, near the left and right edges. Swing the top panel up to gain acess to the two phillip head screws holding the front panel on at the very top of the front panel. Disconect the the door switch, drum light, and then the sensor plug near the lint filter. This allows you to fully remove the front panel. The thermal reset is located on the left side of the burner housing, near the front. It is about the size of a dime, with two wires to it, and a quarter inch long pin in the center of it. Push the pin in firmly. (it will only move a little bit) Reassemble dryer. CLEAN OUT VENT AND CORRECT IMPROPER VENTING to prevent a repeat of the condition.
