A lot of older answering machines had the basic instructions printed somewhere on the device itself. Check under the tape lid/hatch and on the sides or bottom of the device for instructions on a sticker, label, or imprinted into the plastic.
From the base
Press (erase)f during message playback.

Select DELETE. Press OK.

Call your telephone number and wait for the answering machine to answer. If the answering machine is off, it will answer after about 10 rings and series of beeping sounds.
During the greeting message (or a series of beeps when the answering machine is off), press [0] and enter your PIN code within 2 seconds (see "Setting a Security Code or Personal Identification Number (PIN)" on page 54).
The answering machine announces the current time and the number of messages stored in memory. You hear "To play incoming messages, press zero-two. For help, press one-zero." You will hear a beep.
Enter a remote command within 15 seconds, each command there after must be entered within 2 seconds.
The answer mode determines whether your HP All-in-One answers incoming calls or not.

If you set the HP All-in-One to answer faxes automatically, the HP All-in-One will answer all incoming calls and receive faxes. Set the Auto Answer setting to On.

If you set the HP All-in-One to answer faxes manually, you must be available to respond in person to the incoming fax call or your HP All-in-One will not receive faxes. Set the Auto Answer setting to Off. For more information on receiving faxes manually, see Receive a fax manually.

To set the answer mode

Press Setup.

Press 4, and then press 2.
This selects Basic Fax Setup and then selects Auto Answer.

Press right arrow to select On or Off.

Press OK to accept the setting.
