I have a bernina virtuosa 160. I sewed over thick fabrics and now something is bent inside. The needle bar makes a 'side step' everytime the needle goes up. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Yes, take it for service. Even if it requires only a slight adjustment, a technician would have the required tools.

It would probably be best to have the machine checked at a sewing machine shop by a technican

SOURCE: Bernina Virtuosa 150 and uneven layers or bulk.

Hi I have a 15 year old Frister Rossmann serger which I got second hand 10 years ago. It has had one break down which was my fault for not getting it serviced for 8 years. Not sure where in world you are. They sell as Frister Rossmann in UK and Europe and Kenmore in the US. I've used it mainly for dressmaking and soft furnishing projects. One more thought on the Bernina have you tried leaving a query / searching on the US Bernina website www.berninausa.com I use them alot. Try and stick with getting the Bernina sorted, I love mine! SOURCE: bobbin thread wont pick up

Be sure needle is inserted correctly with the flat side in the proper position. Rethread the machine and try again. If it still won't work you have a timing problem which requires a technician or a good mechanic.

SOURCE: Bernina Virtuosa 160

First the simple solution. Make sure your needle is inserted flat side to the back and all the way up.
The only other thing I can think of is that your hook is out of time and this will take a technician to re-time it. You may need to take it in for a servicing.

SOURCE: Sewing thick fabric and machine won't send it through

Sergers are not really meant to sew very thick material. The blades have a maximum amount of range, or thickness that they can reach to cut. If you go outside that range, get ready for a big repair bill! You can break loopers and even the needle plate when you "push" a serger. My advise would be to use you sewing machine for the, "pounding" work. The type of material matters too, A thick Quilt like fabric can be sewn becatuse it's not dense material. A thinner harder denim could max out at 3 layers because of it"s hard finish. If the fabric you're sewing isn't dense like, you could just need new knives.

My BV 160 is giving me problems. The fabric will not move along as I sew. I hve ck'd the feed dogs, they're ok, rethreaded the needle, bobbin, cleaned the bobbin but still not sewing.

have you checked the presser foot to see if the presser foot is holding
the fabric against the feed dogs so they can move the fabric thru to
be sewn by the needle?

I can only sew the first bar of the buttonhole. When I press the securing button nothing happens and the machine carries on sewing the first bar. I just cannot make any of the button holes work. Can I do...

I can't be specific, but I had problems with my Bernina Virtuosa 160 automatic buttonholer.
Check the feeddog teeth height. At their highest point, the FRONT teeth height should be 0.05mm higher than the back teeth.
Good luck.

Similar issue with bunching on the bottom side of vinyl

when sewing thick fabrics and when using thick threads you will usually need to tighten top tension - on most machines to maximum in order for the machine to pull the thread up into the fabric. you must also use a needle which will slide along the thread when thread is through eye of needle (take needle out of machine, put thread through eye and see if needle will pass freely along thread - if not, use a larger needle)

Bernina 1630

I have a Bernina Virtuosa so not the same machine - but this may help. There is an icon on the front of the machine - it is a needlepoint pointing at a dot in an oval - there are arrow buttons on either side. These move the needle left or right of center and it shows on LED screen. I checked mine just now and if you turn machine off and on it resets to center automatically. Hope this helps - Happy Sewing!!

Feed dogs are not coming up high enough to catch the fabric

The fault is with the height of the feed dogs it is an internal adjustment that you tech. should make. As a guide if you cant see the majority of the front teeth above the plate or feel them with your finger then they are to low and need to be raised. Also check that the pressure of the sewing foot is set in the right position on the left side of the machine.
