You might have to clean the carburetor after all they do get gummed up.

SOURCE: john deere 425 mower won't start

The ignition switch module is likely to be the problem, they seem to quit for no good reason. The safety relays and fuses are built into the board that comes with the switch and will most likely fix your problem.

SOURCE: Will crank but won't fire

To run, the engine needs fuel/air mix, compression, and a spark. See if you can narrow your problem down to one of these. Remove the plug, then connect the plug wire and set (or carefully hold) the base of the plug against the cylinder head. Crank the engine and see if there is a spark. If not, the problem is in the ignition system.
If you see a spark, replace the spark plug. Remove the air filter and pour about a tablespoon of gasoline down the carburetor throat. Crank the engine, being careful to stay away from the carburetor in case it backfires. If the engine fires and runs, then it probably is not getting gas (fuel system problem), or not getting enough gas (carburetor or choke problem).
Compression problems are less common, unless the engine has been abused somehow. You can check for compression with a compression gage. Remove the spark plug, install the compression gage in the spark plug hole, then crank the engine with the throttle open and the choke off. If you get at least 60 or 70 psi when you do this test, the compression is probably not the problem.

Motor quit put new gas, charged battery, checked oil still does not turn over- prior to this the engine would backfire prior to starting- I have checked connections-

Does not turn over or does not start? Does not turn over usually means a bad battery or starter. Or connections which you have already checked. There may be a fuse block or inline fuse as well. Does it have a manual pull start as well? Does this turn over the engine or is it siezed up, low/no oil.
Turns over but does not fire usually is spark or the fuel. Back firing would guess spark plug or carberator (air fuel mixture) If it turns over but does not fire, try putting in some Seafoam fuel system cleaner. This will get the varnish-gunking stuff out of the carb. Mix in your tank, turn over quite a bit to get it pulled into your carb bowl and into some of the carb port holes. Let it soak a while and then turn over again every so often to pull in new cleaner. If it starts at some point it will stink a little while burning the cleaner in the tank.

Make sure you have check the old fuel lines and and air vacuum lines for pin holes and cracks as well. Change the plugs. Make sure the air filter is clean. Change the fuel filter. Does it fire if you shoot starter fluid in the carb air intake, this would suggest a fuel issue, such as dirty carb, bad fuel line or fuel filter, or fuel pump.

Oil in the gas tank

Not a big deal. Im assuming this is a 4-stroke push mower and not a leaf blower.
Remove the air box cover, air filter, and air box back plate. Careful there is a gasket on the back of the backplate that if damaged the primer bulb wont work, part # 272653. Remove the fuel line from the carb and drain the tank. Using a 1/2 inch wrench remove the bowl nut from the float bowl on the carb, hold the bowl to the carb as to not break the gasket seal, drain the bowl and replace the bowl nut. If you tried to run the unit and oil is in the cylinder remove the spark plug ( clean the spark plug) and spray some carb cleaner in the hole and pull the starter rope several times to purge the cylinder. Reinstall the spark plug, reattatch the fuel line, install the air box back plate ( leave the air filter and cover off for now), add fresh fuel.
Take unit outside and start, you may need to give it a shot of carb cleaner in the throat of the carb to help it start. It may smoke, it may blow oil out the muffler. Let it run until it quits smoking ( usually around 5 minutes) . Shut it off and complete assembly. It should be fine.

It sounds like you have some debris or water in the carberator. You can drain the bowl easily depending on the style of carb. Most newer units take a 7/16 or 1/2 inch opened end wrench and just loosen the bowl bolt or valve whichever it might be until you get fuel or fluid flow. If there is water or other debris I recommend dumping the tank and flushing the fuel system with a good carb cleaner.

Have a 20 HP twin cylinder KOHLER engine on CRAFTSMAN mower.

If you are able...have someone do a compression check on the engine. Usually if a mower is loosing power and it is a twin cylinder engine, one of the headgaskets may be blown.

Runs for awhile then will quit

Have the fuel lines or engine shielding been modified at all? Has the fuel filter been changed?
If all of that is OK, remove the fuel line from the tank at the fuel pump, remove the fuel fill cap, gently blow air back through the fuel line so you can here bubbles in the tank. The "tank pre-filter" could be plugged.
Let me know.
