It depends on the subflooring that you are tiling on, if it is wood I highly recomend putting a cement based substrate down. E.g. cement board or winder board, there is also several new products that you adhere and then put a scratch coat down (trowels cement and sand mixture). If tiling on top of cement you do not need this. Use a polymer modified mortar and pick your trowel size based on the size of tile, bigger the tile the bigger the trowel notch size. To start tiling drop chaulk lines to find the center of the room which will give you four squares in the room. Start tiling in the furthest square from where you can exit and make sure to follow your chaulk lines. Hope this helps
