The chain broke from the fan switch and I am having trouble finding the replacement part. I found a zing ear ze 208s at Ace hardware, they said it is universal 3 speed. I couldn't make it work connecting it by matching the color wires to the L,1,2,3 to the same as the original switch). So I took them both apart to see what the difference is. I found that the original switch has a metal wrapped around this part with one small plastic space on it. The zing ear has the oposite a small piece of metal with mostly plastic wrapped around it. I went back on line to see if I could find the right part for the fan. Westinghouse Turbo Swirl 78145 30" wide. After a couple of hours researching, I have come to the conclusion Westinghouse doesn't want me to fix the product! What a shame, to throw away a good (and fairly new product) for a $4 part...... I'll tell ya, if you can help me I'd appreciate it.
Zing Ear ze208s switches are NOT all the same - the actual switch wafer on the back varies significantly. Some are single-pole making contact with 1, 2, 3 one at a time, others make contact in combinations. Like L123 for high, L1&2 for medium, and L1&3 for low. The number stamped in the center of the back may indicate the difference. I have one with a "4" that is one-pole at a time, and another that is a "21" and makes multiple contacts at a time.

I had a similar problem. A replacement Westinghouse 3-4 wire 3-speed replacement switch from Home Depot, part # 77020, is a multi-pole that did not work with my ceiling fan. There was no "off" position. Thanks to information provided by dickberr, I found the correct replacement switch, a single pole Zing Ear switch sold under the "Harbor Breeze" name, part # 033905, at Lowe's, at a better price!
Dickberr is correct. There are different types of three speed/four wire switches. Their markings are identical, so you can't determine which one is in the blister pack at the store (Home Depot in my case). The manufacturer would never think of including a simple schematic of how the switch is wired! If the new switch (Westinghouse 77020) will not turn the fan off, you probably need the single pole triple throw model instead (Lowe's sells it as Harbor Breeze 33905 for under $3). For the record that one connects L+1, L+2, L+3, off in sequence. The Westinghouse 77020 connects L+1+2+3, L+2+3, L+1+3, L+1+2 in sequence. I have no idea which one should turn a fan off. Any L,1,2,3 switch should work just as long as the size fits into the space available. Check the volyage and amp requirements on the switches to make sure they are the same. A large amp switch doesn't hurt, it's not a fuse. I've change several that way. As far as the wiring, get an cheap ohm meter and check the wire output first for each wire and match it to the original as you pull the switch. You may need to hook it up and switch the wires around to get it right. A little extra work but you'll suceed.
You do not need to take the switch apart if I understand your question. In fact, "don't" take the switch apart. Merely connect the wire ends of the switch and fan wires using "fastons". Sometimes the switch wires are too long, so you will need to cut them shorter (but not too short) and re-strip the wire ends. Some times you need some gentle prodding to get allthe wires and switch to fit in the space available. But try not to cut or damage any wire insulation.

I have a regency fan and the switch went out put wires back same way three different switches and cant shut fan off we have a black wire i believe gos to the L but for 123 i dont know if 1 is the purple , brown or grey wires,fan is 20 yrs old 15 maybe
Westinghouse 77020 is a 3 or 4 wire fan switch that would not work with my 4 wire fan. It would not turn off. Model 77021 is a 4 wire only switch that worked perfectly.
I swapped fan switches after the chain got pulled out of the original. Being a 3 speed fan I used the ZE-208s. The wire colors were different but I wired the same position as the original and it works just like it's supposed to and took all of 10 minutes to complete.

I tried switching the wires, I researched in the internet - the meaning of the wire colors - I found that most suggest that black is the hot wire, which I beleive should be matched to L, my other identical ceiling fans (because I own 3) have orange in the L spot. I tried the black then the orange in the L spot and nothing happens, dead fan! If I could just match that one, I feel I can figure out the rest. (maybe :D) I am going to look for an ohm meter today. Thanks for the info.
One more thing, is there a trick to getting the wires out once they have been put in? I broke one switch trying to push the small metal piece open with a toothpick. I then tried a paper clip, which worked, but I am afraid of breaking another one. By switching wires in & out. It's frustrating working with these switches they are put together so you can't take them apart.
my old 3-speed fan switch is gone, it sorta blew itself apart so there is no way for me to know which wires were in which holes for the new switch. how can i find out? on the packaging it's not clear, not thorough
