Direct drive whirlpool washer has electrical odor and stops.

I have a 1997 Whirlpool top load, direct drive Washer, model LSL9345EQ1. The motor is only about 4yrs old. A few weeks ago the machine made it about 3 mins into the wash cycle when it stopped. An electrical burn odor was noted. After some time to cool (over temp cutoff protection?) it started up again and has run fine since with no odor. Today the machine filled with water and blew a 20amp circuit breaker. Again, there was an electrical odor. I reset the 20A breaker and it completed its cycle with no problem and no odor. I checked inside the machine and all looks good. No sign of oil or leaks. No abnormal sounds at any part of cycle. Checked start capacitor with ohmmeter, checks good. Did two more loads with no problems, sounds or odor. Very puzzled! Ideas?

The burn odour and stoppage an electrical fault and coupled with a 20 amp circuit breaker tripping indicates a motor fault
Capacitors are tested with an capacitance tester and not an ohm meter as ohms is a resistance and not capacitance reading
When breakers activate it indicates a massive short or current draw and the problem could be in the windings of the motor
could be water getting into the motor at times causing the intermittent problem
I would suggest that you call in a service technician or an accredited electrician to check out the machine properly

How, can I clean the washer. I washed many time my husband dirty coverols and now its effects my washings.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

KENMORE top load, direct drive, neutral drain washers are made by Whirlpool.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The best way to completely clean the washer is to pull the agitators and drum in order to get to the tub.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.

Following is a description of how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor, transmission and basket drive tube on Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper direct drive washers.

As an aside, you don't need a special spanner wrench to remove the spanner nut. I've found that a short (10") pipe wrench hooked over one of the spanner nut tabs and tapped with a hammer will usually loosen the nut. Also, rather than hitting the Drive block directly with a hammer, put a short piece of wood under it first to protect it.

This sounds like a Timer problem. See the following Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load / direct drive washers. It has a troubleshooting section and test procedures.

Washer won't agitate. New transmission...new timer.

Top load, direct drive Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a reversing motor.

It turns one way for agitating and reverses for draining and spinning.

It sounds as if either the motor is shot or one of the connectors is bad.

As a place to start, see the Whirlpool Service manuasl (with wiring diagrams) for their top load, direct drive washers.

When the spin cycle stops, the barrel keeps spinning for approx. 30 seconds and makes a loud "clicking" sound. Everything else seems to work ok.

KENMORE top load, direct drive, neutral drain washers are made by Whirlpool.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The problem points to the brake.

The washer uses a brake system to stop the basket at the end of the spin cycle.

Just like a brake on a car, it's designed to slip a bit so that the basket / car doesn't come to an abrupt halt.

Over time, the brake shoes can wear out so that the tub won't stop.

Following is a description of how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor, transmission and basket drive tube on Whirlpool / Kenmore / Roper direct drive washers.

Top loader series 80 Kenmore doesn't stop after the whole wash cycle, it goes directly to 2nd rinse, then spins again and stops?

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

The first thing to check with a top load, direct drive washer is the "motor coupling" that transmits power from the motor to the transmission.

This is a three part, fail safe unit that is designed to break if the transmission jams for whatever reason.

See the following for how to access and check the coupler.

Here is another illustrated example of how to remove the cabinet, pump and motor in order to check the coupler.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenore PDF on how top load direct drive washers work with a troubleshooting section.

Beyond that, an actual model number such as 110.####### would help to diagnose the problem.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Whirlpool LSR5132PQO not working

Check the lid switch with a volt/ohm meter for continuity.
If no continuity, replace the lid switch.

Check the direct drive coupling on the motor.
If it will not drain, bad lid switch.
If it will not agitate or spin bad drive coupling.
