SOURCE: Some tapes will start and immediately shut down

the vcr is on threshold of belt life. try replacing (or cleaning with alcohol) the take-up reel belt. The vcr has a built-in time-out feature to protect the video tape. if it takes too long for things to happen, shut-down occurs.

SOURCE: engine keeps shutting down

Most Honda engines have an oil pressure switch that prevents engine damage due to low/no oil pressure. Make sure there is sufficient oil in the engine and that the wire is connected to the pressure switch.

SOURCE: onan 4000 start good runs only ten minutsand shuts down, starts up

First locate the oil pressure switch and see if you can bypass it,then see if it runs. If not check the fuel filter and fuel pump, make sure solonoid for fuel pump is kicking on.

SOURCE: engine starts dies down immediately.fuel is ok spark plug ok

Most likely the carburetor is not ok. An engine does not just DIE. If you press the prime bulb, does fuel squirt in carb. If it starts the runs for about 3-5 seconds then dies, there is most likely a float or needle shut off problem. Or it could be as simple as a clogged carburetor. It only takes one tiny peice to clog one. Take the carb off and make sure all jets( small holes in carb) are clean. Mike. Rate 100% please.

SOURCE: Starts, runs a few seconds then shuts down. Will

Check for a low lube oil sensor problem first. Could be low oil pressure or a failed sensor. The sensor is timed and if pressure doesn't come up, then unit is shutdown.

Check fuel filter and also air leaks in the fuel supply lines.

Check if the fuel shutoff solenoid is responsible for the shutdown. If it closes just before the engine quits, then it is being commanded to shutdown, probably as a safety interlock.

Testimonial: "Very good info. I don't think I have a fuel shutoff seloniod unless it's internal to the injector pump."

Why does it start, then shut down immediately?

Hi Tom:
Too much oil can prevent an engine from running.
I'd suggest that you drain the oil and then fill to the correct level, AND NO MORE.
Then if you try to run the engine and it stops after a while, you can check the oil. If the level is correct then oil is not the problem.
At that point, reply as a COMMENT to this post and I'll try to help.
Cheers.

Why does it shut down while driving?

First, do not run engine low on oil. Next, run tests when it has failed. Spark to plugs? Correct fuel pressure?

UNIT SHUTS DOWN FREQUENTLY

How soon after starting does it shut down?
The hour meter is fed directly from the AC output off the generator stator, if there is no AC output the meter will not run. Assuming it shutdowns quickly, check 1st the oil level and make sure the low oil sender unit is ok, wire #24 to ground. If that is bad it will shut down. Check to see if you have 240V on L1 and L2 on the breaker for the brief time it does start, that will confirm stator/rotor has an output, then your problem moves from the generator portion to either the oil sender, or control board.

Hi, if it re starts immediately and requires choking it is a fuel related problem. If it has to sit for a while before restarting, check for lost spark as soon as it stops. If no spark make sure the unit is level and oil is full when sitting level otherwise the oil cutoff switch will shut it down. If oil and unit levelling are ok and there is no spark the cdi unit is most likely faulty. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

My service engine light is on and the engine is running rough . What doni do ?

Shut down engine immediately before more damage is done. The engine oil and the oil pressure condition must be checked.
The timing belt condition or if the period has elapsed for changing the timing belt must be checked.

If you're sure it isn't a fuel issue, also check these things:

The engine oil - it could be low on oil and shutting down on low oil pressure

If water cooled, check the coolant level. Same thing - the engine may have a low coolant sensor.

Make sure the unit isn't overloaded.

If it has overspeed control check to see if the engine is running unusually fast when it does run.

Difficult to start again after warm up engine.

give the engine a minute or two to cool down before turning it off. This cool down period allows oil to circulate and cool down the bearings in the turbo. If you shut off the engine immediately after hard driving, the oil can gum up around the hot bearings and create problems down the road.
Hope this helps
