SOURCE: I cannot disengage the cutting attachment so that

You haven't specified the model number, but pretty much all riding mowers use a plunger-type electrical switch to engage the mower. If it's stuck in the 'lifted' position (mower engaged) then it has broken internally. You must replace it. In doing that, the wires need to be placed back on the correct terminals, so take a picture of the wires (showing their colors) before you disconnect them from the switch. Take the broken switch to a lawnmower shop to find a replacement. Shouldn't be more than $10 - $20. Good luck! Please rate my solution if you found it helpful.

SOURCE: Found large spring at end

There are 4 pulleys on your deck. Two for the blades, these are the big ones on the outsides. To the insides there are two, one on left side is an idler and the one on the right is a tenioning pulley that hooks to the blade engage lever throught the cable you found. Look on top of this pulley and see if it has a piece sticking up. If so the spring at the end of the cable attaches here. Slide it over. You also need to find the clip that goes through the little hole in the end that keeps it from sliding off. Make sure that the cable is properly routed and attached near the back of the deck. If it is still attached, good, if not you will have to find that pin also.

If this is helpful, please rate.

Testimonial: "I tracked down the problem, hooked up the cable, put the pin back in, got the blades to engage before I got your response.Thank you just the same."

How did I get my troy bilt lawnmower in reverse

If it is a riding mower 1st depress the clutch, lift the mower blades to the up position then move the shift lever to R. It will stall and shut off if you attempt to go into reverse with the blades in the cutting position.Mine has reverse on the fly but I never use it. Hope this helps.

What will cause blades on J.Deere G100 mower to Freely turn by hand without causing Spindles or belt to turn even though Bolts are still tight and when installed Blade turned only if spindle turned

Do Ray:
If the blade engagement lever is in the disengaged position, the belt will be loose, allowing you to turn the blades by hand. If you place the blade engagement lever in the engaged position (with the motor off) it will be hard to turn the blades because of the tension on the belt. If the blades are still easy to turn with the blade engagement lever in the engaged position, you need to replace the blade drive belt!

Craftsman riding mower blades won't disengage

This is too late, but for the next person: There is an extension spring around the cable attached to the blade engage/disengage lever.

On my tractor one end of the spring had the hook broken off or it. Because it is around the cable it is still in place but doesn't stretch when you engage the blade (so can't pull the pulley out and slacken the belt when you disengage).

The replacement is a few dollars and can be bought on ebay or Amazon.

Blades won't disengage

Hi,
When the mower is off and the clutch is disengaged you should not be able to physically turn the blade(s) if you can then you need to adjust the blade brake (look on the mower deck and you should see what appears to be a brake pad). Your owners manual will show you how to adjust. If you need a copy of the owners manual then I would suggest going to www.managemyhome.com and downloading a free copy of the manual for your mower (Need model number which starts is located under the seat).
Good luck!

Mtd 17.5 will not start

Riding mower have three safety switches. One under the seat, one under the clutch and one on the blade lever. Make sure all are making contact as the button tip can get worn after many uses. These can be replaced. One trick you can try before that..
Sit on the mower and pull the blade engagement lever back further than necessary and hold it in that position while trying to start it. This may work as it puts more pressure on the safety switch button and makes contact possible.
